helmet q&a was created by donthaveakawman
So "my friend" dumped his bike, thank god he is not dead. He was having issues with his front brakes and fell off his "GPZ 900" at low speeds not in excess of 25 mph (rainproof jacket makes good low friction sliding for wet weather). His helmet hit the pavement;
true or false when his helmet hit the ground as a general rule he should toss that helmet.

so basically from what i understand he was holding his breath so the helmet visor wouldn't fog over and then fell off the bike. :whistle:

My understanding is that any wreck is a good time to get a new lid. Just dropping it on the ground from 3ft (not on your head) shouldn't do it, but head smacking ground in wreck will change the internal foam and the helmets effectiveness.

Helmets are probably a single use item: one impact is all they are designed for.
The mfg probably has guidelines... of course we already know what they are going to say.

I'm no expert but but a 25mph or less crash wouldnt prompt me to buy a new helmet in fear of strctual
integrity unless I landed on my head. now the scratches may prompt me to paint it.

Be careful with the paint, I'd be afraid that it might screw with the material used to make the shell :huh:

How old was the helmet, and how hard did it hit?
Definitely best to invest in a new one, as it is the only thing saving his scull. Unless you go all out, they are pretty reasonable. I got my CL15 for $65 + shipping.

i think he said it was a hjc streetforce razor multisport, it is uncracked, fiberglass i looked myself on the inside, full face style with visor dot approved, i still think a replacement is in order.

Unless money is very tight, why take the chance that a microscopic fracture could result in the helmet being unable to prevent an injury next time? Given that concussions and head injuries are the hot topic in sports--both stick and ball and motor racing--these days, common sense tells me that the safest course is replacement.

...if it's a very expensive and fairly new helmet, you can send it back to the Manufacturer and have them inspect it and refurbish it if the shell is OK.
...if it's a cheapie helmet, invest in a good one.
...if it's an older helmet, invest in a new one.
...you've got to ask yourself, how much is you life worth? If the answer is not much, then stick with the old helmet.
...if you want to live to a ripe old age, the investment is worth it.
