For the same reason 6's are smooth, small triples seem to be smoother than expected as well. I've ridden one or two GT380's, and as grumpy56 said, it was remarkably smooth.

I've ridden both the KZ1300 and the CBX the KZ1300 was silky smooth and very fast with a lot of low-end torque. The CBX was not nearly as smooth I rode one on one leg of a poker run when I swapped bikes with a buddy. I was riding a GS1100E and I couldn't wait to get off the CBX and back on the 1100 Suzuki. I also rode a first year Yamaha Venture Royale from Ohio to Tennessee and all over middle-Tennesee over a 10 day period, super smooth, very fast and comfortable.

A friend of mine just bought a 2012 BMW GT1300 six cylinder that I can't wait to try riding. This is the first BMW and the first modern bike that made me say wow.

I've rode a couple V4's that seemed really well balanced and smooth like the v65 sabre, and newer vfr800.

I've ridden 4 bikes were I couldn't feel the engine runnin, 2 likely and 2 very unlikely.

Honda CB350F. Totally smooth from 300 to 11500 rpm
Suzuki GT380. Totally smooth from 1500 to 9000 rpm
Kawasaki Z1 with 1100cc kit, badly worn. Glassy smooth from 1000 to 8000 rpm
Triumph T140 750 Bonnie. Dead smooth from 800 to 4000 rpm.

The rpm ranges are the ones I personally used while riding them. Of these bikes, I liked the Z1 best because the riding position, the seating comfort and the handling (at a moderate pace since it was a loaner) were all very pleasing.

The Z1300 I owned had a buzz around 4000 rpm that would numb my fingers within minutes. On the other end of the spectrum, my VS1400 Intruder would vibrate hard enough above 3000 rpm to rattle my eyeballs around in their sockets, yet my hands never got numb. In other words, there are many kinds of vibrations - some that annoy, others that don't. And what's what differ from one individual to the next.
