I am 17, have a clean driving record and my MSF in April. I called insurance for a quote on my KZ440 LTD (1983) and they said 845 dollars.. that is a little high for what I am looking for. That was minumum coverage too...Not only did they want 845 but they wanted it all at once, and said I couldnt pay monthly. Only one lump payment.

Anyone have good experience with any company in particular for motorcycle insurance on a 17 year old or near that age? first motorcycle also.

I am in New Brunswick, Canada if that helps.

never heard of not being able to make monthly payments. I'm not real sure how insurance works in the great white north but down here a man under 25 and single gets pretty much raped on insurance, it's all based on statistics. Also got a notice about 18 months ago that my insurance company would start using a different formula that included credit score for some reason. But if you wanna ride you gotta pay the piper. Be safe young man and happy riding.

In Ontario Insurance is the biggest rip off scam going.
That is not a bad price for your insurance since most young guys under 25 are refused insurance here and it would be 3 times that price if you do find it.

I got my first bike in 07 or 08, so I was in my mid 20's and I paid over a thousand for my kz550. If I had gotten over 600cc's it would have been much more. State farm was the only insurance company that would insure me at the time with no MSF course and they did monthly payments. I now pay one lump sum and pay about the same for my kz1000. My KLR650 is surprisingly only a little less. I am turning 30 this april, so it should drop. 845 for a 17 yr old is pretty good dude!

Can you add your bike to your auto or parents auto policy? Also, look for Motorcycle Specific insurance companies like Rider Insurance in the US.

My 900 is only $100 for a full year.

we can't do that here with the auto insurance, and the motorcycle specific ones are the best, but still awful.

Insurance companies charge more for under 25 yr old riders, thats pretty much it dude. Now the monthly payments thing is a different story, that shouldnt be an issue.

What about policy term options? Some companies offer 6-8 months coverage instead of 12 months, that might bring the premium down.

tried that too, no go. The closest thing available is from TD or RBC insurance where you "pay while you ride" ie. through the summer you pay 200 a month, and then nothing in the winter...What I do to try to get my moneys worth is ride when I can in the winter. I only ride when I can get out for a few hours to make sure the oil gets hot enough to not turn to white foam.

I'm in Saskatchewan, Canada, and I can plate my 78 KZ650 for $7.25 a month because it's considered an antique.

Beauty :cheer:

That being said, I'm in Saskatchewan, so I only really have a few good months of riding in the year.

I plan on doing the same with my kz once it is done, but it will still cost a lot more than 7.25 a month. And I won't be able to ride to work on it I guess...
