Well, I guess you got the dirt straight away. Resto= bucho buckos.
That grab bar looks to be from a kz and I saw a few other non z1 parts. Just keep everything and when the time and money allows restore those pieces. For the rest of the stuff you know you can swap out for working parts or shiny and clean. Later you can always put the original stuff back on. Definitely make sure the engine is in good condition and everything is up to speck. You don't want to ruin a perfectly original motor by not having all the maintenance done etc. That head would be all but irreplaceble I assume. Count on 15k to get that bike to looking new. These pipes are not cheap although I personally like my pods and vance and hines, dyna ignition and coils. Points are not my bag. These would be the things I would deviate from stock from and they do not affect anything as far as being able to go back later. Well, the pods one may argue about the rings but it is what it is.
You know what's up. Just don't do a jerry springer type resto. If you are going to do original do that bike right or pay someone to do the stuff you are not experienced at to do for you. I know of some people on this forum whose idea of a complete resto includes rustoleum and rubber bands. That shit just ain't gonna cut it for a proper resto.
I probably would put it up for sale if I couldn't afford to do it right and didn't want to put a ton of money in the bike but I would sell it for 10k to see if there are any real kz nuts out there who would put up the cash and I wouldn't sell it to any importers either. Such an early serial number I would bet most of the guys on the forum would give not only the left testicle but also would pay the Dahmer price to acquire.
I personally don't care about serials. But everyone else does it seems. Milk them good for your find and then buy another z1 completely restored as you like it.
Gosh we are all going on about this find. This should be reported to the kz authorities to anounce tonight on the ten o'clock news. :P

Make sure you that you keep whatever it is you take/replace off that bike. I even kept all the original hardware from my Z1 build so I could get them refinished. I used nice shiny stuff from Lowes but there's markings on the head, unlike the plain/blank factory stuff.

Keep everything.

Im sure its probably already sold but that bike rack looks like it may have been a good and probably went cheap.
Seems like the owners either yanked the lease or more likely this person who owned the shop may have passed on. No one in their right minds would leave such an early z1 go for that price unless they didn't know better. This reminds me of the time my friends friend was a yard sale and saw a super balanced alto for sale who then called my sax friend who stole it for 300. That horn had the original pads and laquer on it! It looked brand new! Needless to say it was an alto and my friend played tenor so when I asked him to play it the horn literally blew my mind. I begged him to sell it to me for what the horn was worth. Nope, he was keeping it. I told him to sell it to me first before anyone else. Well, to make a long story short he sold it. At the time I had the money but he thought he would be able to get more for it so I told him to let me make payments for the remainder but that I desperately would love to own that horn. In the end? He sold on consignment and got the big dollars he thought the horn would sell for but by the time the person who took the consignment few out it came out to be a grand less than what my offer was. HAHAHAHa sucker should have taken my offer.

Kawasaki coils were marginal right from the factory and with time and heat became intermittant making for spark that was undependable.

If it were me, I'd get a set of Dyna Grey 2.2 ohm coils or the Green 3.0 ohm coils. Are you going to run the ignition points or change to a Dyna "S" for a daily driver?
