I just got the beast fired up but noticed that the tach doesn't work. *STUPID QUESTION ALERT* How exactly DO these things work? when I thread the cable off the engine it's not connected, likewise at the tach.. thanks for any info.

Not sure what you mean by not connected... well, connect it.

The cable runs from the head to the tach. It is driven by a worm gear that connects to the exhaust cam. That turns a steel braided line inside the cable that spins the input shaft at the tach... and always leaks oil like a mo-fo! :P

Thanks for the help.

I know about the worm gear and how the tach works I guess I should have been more specific, I just don't see how the worm gear output engages the braided steel to actually turn it.. I just see flat surfaces. Maybe my cable is broken.. anyway i'll take another look with pics if I have to.

My 900 has a square end on the tach cable that inserts into the head. The gear turns the square end which rotates the cable which turns the square end at the tachometer.

Maybe this pic will help?

Thanks for the reply,

mine looks a lot like that, less the steel cable out the ends haha. so that cable should pull right out then?

Perhaps the inner cable has been removed, leaving only the cable sheath.

Can imagine a scenario where the inner cable broke and was removed, and the sheath alone was reinstalled.

Good Fortune! :)

Yes, also the inner cable tends to slide out when the lower end is disconnected. I could see it falling out if it worked loose while riding. I would just order a new cable, personally.
