I don't see a "fence" on the assembly drawings at kz900.com or any other assembly breakdowns i've seen.. could you take a picture or show me something to show what it is?

KZ900 doesn't have the fence.

With nothing but the bolt itself being screwed in, what apparently stops it when it won't screw in any further.

For example, does it run out of thread?
Or does it bottom out with exposed thread still remaining?

Good Fortune! :)

Sorry, my mistake. I guess after 33 years of changing the oil on my KZ650 I assumed everything from a Whizzer scooter to a B1 bomber uses the same oil filter configuration as the KZ650.

As you have the dial calipers as a depth gauge, hold up the plate to the bottom of the pan, then measure the distance to the bottom of the threaded hole? How does this compare with your bolt length?

That is the wrong bolt. Note the location of the O-ring. The bolt should measure 115mm from the head flange to the end of the bolt. Sorry the numbers aren't visible in the pic.

Thanks for the replies guys that helps a lot. Before I saw this stuff I went down to the place that sold me the bolt.. they acknowledged that it was likely the wrong bolt and gave me a brand new replacement that they said was the correct bolt by the book. I go to install it and it is the wrong thread size!!! Now in their defense they have given me great service and they have never been wrong before.. but considering this is a one hour round trip for me to make i'm kinda getting tired of it. Can anyone tell me what the thread specs are for this oil filter bolt??

The new one they gave me turns out to be 110 mm but does have the right o-ring location.. There are also 14 holes in the damn thing, and it has a Ball/Spring/Pin assembly inside as well.. It measures 19 mm threads.. not sure what pitch though

Sorry I don't know the thread specs. Can't measure just now 'cause mine are busy.

 Is cutting additional thread being considered?

Meanwhile, here are some ebay items.

Good Fortune! :)

Problem solved.. The second bolt that they gave me ended up being the right one.. for some reason the manufacturer did a poor job on the threads so we ran through them one time on the lathe and it threaded right in... That was the final peice before I could attempt to start the engine.. IT FIRED!! turned over for a few seconds with a sputter.. then I flipped the choke on and turned it over for a couple of seconds and it fired right up... couldn't believe it. After over 27 years! thanks to TJ's Cycle Salvage in Calgary!
