Wrong Oil Filter Bolt? was created by Kyle_w11
Are all KZ 900 oil filter bolts the same? I have a '74 KZ 900 engine and the previous owner didnt have an oil filter assembly.. i've tracked one down and go to put it in.. the bolt doesn't go in far enough to seat the oil filter cover. Are there variations of filter bolts?

yes, it goes pretty much all the way in with my hand.. I go to torque it to 65 in-lbs and the cover isn't even seated.

Does anyone have one they can measure? with the oil filter bolt in hand and the oil filter cover on the bolt. i measure 97.87 mm from the end of the bolt to the mating face of the oil filter cover.

i'm thinking the guy at the shop gave me the wrong bolt. here's a pic.. looking at the holes, they're slotted and chamfered.. it looks like it might be the wrong one.

Here is the measurement I was taking

Here is a pic of the oil pan.. doesn't look stock to me.. any input..

Nope, doesn't look like the stock one. if I'm right, its a deep sump pan that someone has either modded or bought from someone. Doesn't look particularly professional though...

That just means the sump is modified though right.. the oil filter assembly should be the same, no?

From what I understand this bike was modified for a friend in the early 80's from a guy who raced/built drag bikes. Clearly he didn't completely finish the buid. I guess he just got the engine built and back into the bike and that was it. It baffles me that the oil filter assembly is missing though. I agree it doesn't look professional but it will do the trick. What's the purpose of the deep sump? is it just more cooling time?

You do have the rest of the oil filter assembly parts (fence, spring, washer) right? ed

I believe it's a shield that covers the top of the filter assembly. It goes about 1/4 down and looks like SS.

Deep sumps have two purposes, one to allow more oil in the crankcase as more oil =better cooling and more lube.Second reason is to retain some oil where needed for extremes in accel or decel where all the oil tends to run from one end of crankcase to the other, thus causing either oil pressure lite to come on or oil pump pickup to run dry.I have a Schnitz Racing oil gate in my bike for the same reason.bj
