My buddy is moving to L.A. and taking his stripped down KZ400 with him.

He has no horn, no signals, and a shortened stock exhaust (which is much louder than the whisper of the original) and pods running very nicely. It also has clip-ons (if that matters). The headlight is stock with a Halogen bulb and the tail is a smaller, aftermarket housing available at most parts stores as a trailer light (still uses same 1157 bulb as the stock tail light).

How much is he going to have to change to not get hassled by the man?

Also, if he keeps the Illinois registration, which he may, will he have to change anything or will they leave him alone if it's an out-of-state vehicle?

I've rode in the LA area for over 30 years and I don't think he needs to change a thing. My Yosh exhaust is short and sort of loud, my tail light is also my rear blinkers and no tickets for that stuff ever.

Not in LA but in San Diego, never been hassled about open Yosh or lack of turn signals, speedometer, license plate light, the only thing I could see attract attention would be an out of state plate. Don't know if you have to come in for inspection if you change the reg.
Over here they tend to leave vintage bikes alone, unless you are riding like a complete a-hole.

Thanks for the replies.

So is there an official inspection for the bike, or is it only if he takes the license test on the bike?

If the paper work is in order I don't think they'll even look at the bike just the test to get your license. The only inspection station is the CHP.

The one time I ever registered an out of state title, the DMV walked out and checked that the vin and engine serial numbers matched with the title. That was the extent of it. There were other "Special Construction" bikes there for initial registration, and they were missing every bit as much as your buddies Kz400, and probably more.

When I came here to SoCal in the '80s they never saw the bike. She made me go outside and rub a pencil on paper over the engine vin and that was it. :)
