my new exhaust was created by cobura
I just wanted to post a picture of my new exhaust. I found some interesting information about kz650. The exhaust pitch is the same as the new Zephyr 750. Although the Zephyr isnt sold in the U.S., there are a ton of aftermarket pipes offered for it. My new pipe is a 4 into 1 "MK Midnight" with a "monaka" type silencer. Bolted right on no problem.

Here's some other random pictures I thought I'd share from the past year.

Here is my friend's shop that specializes in vintage Z's.

Here's a picture of my trip to northern japan on my $600 CBR250R.

Here's an interesting sign that I saw in the restroom of a highway service area near Osaka. I'm surprised there are actually people who dont know how to use the toilet, haha.

Also, if anyone would like one of these exhausts, I would be glad to ship some over. They don't come cheap, but I think it would be nice to have access to something other than V&H or kerker. There doesnt seem to be much offered anymore for the z650.

That is a very cool looking exhaust. What does "monaka" mean?
It looks like this is intended as a road race pipe that does not allow for oil filter access, is that correct?

It is a very compact pipe so it looks like it would be easy to take on and off.

How much in US dollars would a pipe like this cost?

You are correct that it does not allow for access to the oil filter, so its a little bit of a pain, but worth it B)

Monaka is a japanese word that is the name of a traditional kind of ice cream/pastry. Its like two long cup-shaped pieces of ice cream cone, pressed together to make kind of an ice cream sandwich. The "monaka" silencer resembles this because you can see the seam where the two halves of the silencer were welded together. The monaka type silencer is the original Yoshimura race pipe that was used on race bikes during the 70's. This pipe is pretty much what you would see if you went to suzuka circuit in the late 70's.

In U.S. dollars, its about 500, but I got mine used for 350.

Here's a better image of a monaka type silencer (not mine, but close)

Here's an actual monaka

Sorry if I seem excited, I'm just really glad to finally find an exhaust for my bike. I've been searching forever.

Thanks for the photos...jeez, I wish I had a shop like that to hang out in...

I have a friend who was in Lima, Peru in a public restroom (with those western-style toilets) and he walked in on someone who was squatting on the toilet (with the lid DOWN I might add) making a big mess...they could have used those signs there. :)

I just wanted to add one more bit of useful kz650 info. I saw a kz650 racer custom the other day. It had a set of aftermarket CR carburetors. I know that CR and all other big name carburetor companies no longer make performance carburetors for the kz650, so I asked where he found it. He said his carbs are actually from a Z750 FX. The pitch is the same size as the kz650, however the size of the rubber gaskets going from the engine to the carbs dont fit. This problem can be solved by simply swapping the gaskets with those from a Z1.

that pipe is way cool and the 70's theme is the way to go 1000% imo....do you guys have a good used parts or a good barter circle to keep costs down some???

it seems like you homeboys have all these unobtainable goodies just flowing all around on your bikes...

how much in u's dollars do guys throw at these babies...some of the Z1's look to be worth more than a 1098 duck right off the showroom floor....

is is what i think??

2000$ ohlins and 1000$ carbs with a 1000$ yosh hand bent pipe,1000$ paint jobs...ect...ect.. or are some of those rootbeer and orange tricked out bikes usually put togehter through half price swaps and scores like your pipe.....

If interested I will be sure to take more pics this weekend, watch for them!

Yes it is nice being over here and having access to all of these vintage parts, but as i said they dont come cheap. My bike however, did not cost nearly that much, I'm quite poor.

If you are interested in these parts, I will say that NOTHING is unobtainable if you are willing to pay the price. Those bikes shown in the picture each cost about $40,000, and yes I do think that is ridiculous. I have less than $5,000 in my bike though.

I am trying to go for that 70's racer look. I just bought a set of vintage BEET all steel backsteps from the 70's. Pictures coming soon. I can get these parts for anyone if they are interested. I sometimes do ebay auctions.

Just out of curiousity how much is shipping from Japan to the states. I have heard that shipping from one of those Japanese websites is quite high not to mention the price of the parts.

For instance shipping that pipe to the states.

Nice part for the 650 by the way

i would imagine the shipping for a full exhaust to be around $100, just because it would require a very large box. If you really want a nice exhaust though, spending an extra $100 is nothing. That Z1-R in the above picture has a full-titanium hand bent exhaust. I think it costs around $3,000, but my god is it light! It actually gets better flow and more power because the arrangement and direction of the pipes where the 4 headers meet are related to the firing order of the engine. It actually creates a constant cyclone type airflow that helps propel the exhaust out of the pipe. Not sure if that is entirely accurate, but thats what i heard.

This store that sells these bikes and parts is one of only four in the country. Its notorious for being expensive, but they do have the best. They actually enter their bikes in professional class races at suzuka and quite often win.

Many parts however can be bought fairly cheap. The CR racing carburetor i referred to above is only $800, which is actually a good price for a true racing carb. My backsteps were only $200.
