Got Spanked By a Bentley

I was on my way to breakfast this morning on my GS1100 and I got spanked hard by a Bentley. My GS1100 is by no means a drag bike, it is bone stock with pods. It runs great and is a blast to ride, it also has a Windjammer fairing which is why I chose the GS this morning so I could hide behind the windshield, it was in the low 50's.

I was riding by the University of South Florida when I saw this car hauling in my mirror and cutting traffic. We got caught by a light and were side by side. I figured he was in a hurry and wanted to play so I took the bait.

When the light turned green we both got on it and I had him untill I hit 3rd gear. That was all there was to it he blew by me so fast my jaw dropped with total amazing embarresment. That car smoked my ass hard. It was an adrenilin rush and was fun but I wont mess with one again.

As I was eating breakfast I was curious what it had under the hood, so I got home and did some searching and found out......Under the hood is a 6.0L turbocharged W12 engine that produces 621 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.

It is so embarrassing I thought I would share my spanking with all.

A stock gs1100 is around .177 hp/lb (figuring 100 hp and 564 lbs (dry), got those numbers from www.motorcyclespecs.co.za )

Edit just thought of something while on the john, do my best thinking there! If you add ~200 lbs for the rider your gs only gives you .131 hp/lb add another 30 lbs for a wet weight and you get .126 hp/lb. When you add 200 lbs for the driver the Bentley goes to 121 hp/lb.

I guess if you sunk another $270,000 into your bike you should be embarrassed if you couldn't go 204 mph and keep up with the Bently. But, considering your bike is pretty much stock I wouldn't feel too bad

BTW, hp to weight ratios matter regarding acceleration (that's why you started out winning) but don't have much to do with top speed because they don't take into consideration the primary factor that limits top speed - aerodynamic drag. This is where the Bently's massive torque & hp clobbered you.

Aerodynamic drag is a force in the opposite direction of the vehicles forward movement. You need enough power and torque to overcome this force and move the air around the vehicle. At low speeds drag is not a major concern, but as the speed increases, the aerodynamic drag will increase with the square of the speed (speed2). This means, in order to double the speed you will increase the drag force by four times.

If your drag force is 70 lbs at 50 mph, then the force at 100mph is 280 lbs. At 200 mph the drag force would be 1120 lbs, and so on.

Figure $273,600 ad 15% for taxes etc.(conservatively) , that's $314,640. That works out to $506.67 per horsepower. What's your $/hp ratio?

a decent Bike will see just about ANY car off to 60..... then your in a whole different gamepark, I bet that Bentley owner is in the country club bragging how his Bentley 'trashed' a biker...

Back in the day I had a 69 SS396 375HP Nova I would Drag it at the strip it was a high11 low12 car all day. Well this guy with a 350 honda would almost beat me. I would get sick of seeing that little sucker buzzing up on me.Don't know what this has to do with anything but hey what the heck..
