73 900 Basement find was created by rdgrnr
I have found a 73 900 that has been stored in a basement since'82. Owner says no rust and has not tried to start it.
I can't go look at it until tomorrow, and it is about 3 hours away. Any tips on what to look for other that stuck motor? I am assuming that the carbs and tank have been drained. And what would be a fair price to pay?
Thanks

Fair price? As cheep as you can get it. Not running $500-800
If it's all there (STOCK) With no alterations Not running $1500
If the motor has not bin turned over in 20 yr. I would NOT turn it over
till I had the valve cover and flood the head with synthetic oil.
I would also put some oil down the spark plug holes.
If this bike is all stock. color, pipes, bares, and so on. I would take the
top end apart, head, pistons, valves. Before even trying to start it.
The clutch will also have to come out. The plates will all be stuck together.

Good luck. You may have found a gold mind.

73 Z1 basket case - $2500+
Complete bikes start at around $4000
Decent bikes are fetching $6000-$8000
Very nice bikes $15000 and up...

If everything is complete and the bike is original, the bike is worth some very good money.

I hope it's a deal for you. Anyone that has a Z1 knows they are worth $$ in any condition. If it even ressembles decent and original even if not running would be worth $2000 or more. A few days ago here in Denver a 1973 Z1 came up on craigslist for $1000. Wrecked in 1990 and never repaired, sat outside for many years, original paint faded to white, original pipes rusted, one sidecover missing, seat torn to shreads, I assume not running. This bike sold whithin 1 hour of listing.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

We stock a fair number of parts for the Z1's. However, the value of a 73 Z1 is really driven by originality. If you do buy the bike, don't think about replacing anything unless absolutely essential. ...AND NEVER THROW AWAY ANYTHING YOU DO REMOVE.

Many of the parts on the 73 Z1 are unique to limited frame and engine numbers. Many parts are date coded. Replacing any unique part with new parts (either OEM or aftermarket) can devalue the bike.
