ebay NOS insanity was created by The Gringo
Just when I think I’ve seen it all on ebay something pops up and sells for a figure that makes me say WTF? That happened tonight on 3 different auctions. I clicked on some NOS part that popped up on the KZR site, went to ebay and looked at it and then started looking at the other items the seller had listed. I saw 3 parts listed with really high bids and about 3 hours to go so just for fun I figured I'd watch them to see what they ended at.

This first one has to be the WTF example of all time. Ebay item # 160227423681 it is incorrectly described as being a clutch lever dust cover, when what it is really a master cylinder dust boot. Before you look at what it sold for, keep in mind Jeff at Z-1 Ent. sells these for $4.94 and they are genuine Kawasaki parts.

The next WTF example is ebay item #160227402689 a NOS Lester rear wheel for a H1, H2 or Z-1.

Last WTF example we have ebay item # 160227405572 a NOS Lester front wheel for a H1, H2 or Z-1.

It was the same seller for all 3 parts but 3 different buyers. I’m sure he is one happy camper tonight.

Am I crazy or is this insane money for these parts? I know Jeff Saunders deals with this stuff everyday so I’m hoping he will chime in here and tell me what I’m missing. At this point I’m just shaking my head and saying to myself, WTF?

It's really not that uncommon, and oddly enough seems to happen in cycles (perhaps lunar influenced?).

I'm thinking NOW would be the perfect time for me to list all the parts that Bluemeanie and I removed from my SR parts bike yesterday.
Of course I'll include the typical "rare", "no longer available" and "OEM" keywords/statements to the descriptions so I can get top dollar for my "treasures"!

No, that wouldn't be cruel at all, just think how much money we could save him in the future. Now I'll grant you the part that Jeff has for sale is not exactly the same one as it doesn't have the little wrinkled gator section, but for a difference of $195.00 I think I could live with that.:S

I totally misread the final price on that dust boot and thought it read $22.50, which is still WAY over what Z1 Ent has them for.

After adding up what that seller is going to net on those 3 auctions, I have to disagree with him laughing all the way to the bank.
After seeing the ending bids, he's probably still in ICU with glazed over eyes and suckin' oxygen through a tube!:woohoo:

For the serious restoration, only documented NOS parts will do. Accept no substitutes. That's the only way I can explain it.

I'll add that the majority of us are riders and treat our bikes accordingly. The people active in these forums generally aren't the serious restoration types so going nuts over some NOS doo-dad isn't typically our style.

Nate

Nates vintage bike axiom: Riding is the reward for time spent wrenching.
Murphys corollary: Wrenching is the result of time spent riding.

I actually did send him a link for Z1. I hate seeing people being ripped off. Bad choice of words, since he placed the bid, so buyer beware. If he can shop on E-bay, he can do some research to see there are other options. Hopefully I've opened his eyes a bit...

The master cylinder dust cover is a very hard to find item. Kawasaki changed the design and the ones available from Kawasaki (which we sell) do not have the ribs on. I do think the price is a 'little' high, but for someone restoring a perfect bike, I can understand the desire to make the bike 100% correct.
