Quote: "Back when I had chambers and big carbs etc on my H2 I could generally run 12.40s in the quarter mile here in Denver (5800ft), the KZ650 would run around 14.3."

I guess a lot depended on who was driving the bike, altitude, state of tune etc., but 14.3 sounds a little weak for a new KZ650. I'm not saying everyone was a PeeWee Gleason who could coax a 12.99 out of a one, but even Cycle World's 160 lb. rider could squeeze 13.19 out of a stock KZ650. Please see Feb.1977 Cycle World Road Test results Below. I can't even imagine any stock 1975 Harley being that quick.

Yea I was a little disappointed in the KZ650 times too but this is 5800 ft. We always saw and expected about exactly 1 sec slower times up here and the 13.19 was the best 650 time I saw in the tests in 1977. 1978 saw 13.4 if I remember right in the magazines and I'm sure at 200lb I wasn't exactly the lightest rider ever to run a KZ650. Most CBXs ect were running in the low-mid 13s up here, KZ1000s were mid to high 13s. Each year we had a motorcycle only drag day up here and back in 1980 or 81 there was probably 75 street bikes showed up and they had a special eliminations section for the "fast 16". H2 running 12.40s made the fast 16 here in Denver that year. My dads old 1967 Oldsmobile 442 with the 400 big block seeming like an exceptionally fast car ran a 16.50, I looked in motor trend and saw they ran 15.50 when new at sea level, so right on track there. I'd take those long trips and when I got out of here it felt like I had a supercharger down at sea level.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Now that's just sad.....but funny......a brand new HD blown away by a 25 year old 500cc pushrod Honda....with 50-60 pounds of bags etc hanging from it and a 285 pound rider. Of course maybe the HD owner is not too slick at the lights ???
