Uncertain whether this matters, but which pilot adjustment in carb -- air screw or mixture screw?

I have the carbs with the screws in the front of the bowls, under the venturis.

My motorcycle is in storage, but my title states frame number 001428, and model as 650D1. I think I have a true D1 model and not a D1A. Very interesting...

To add to what NONB said, on the back of my FSMs:

1978 D1 Beginning Frame Number KZ650D-000001~
1978 D1A Beginning Frame Number KZ650D-003440~

Sounds like yours is a D1. Ed

There are also a few other things that were changed from the D1 to the D1A and not only include the headlight switched changed to the filled in spot and the light always on, but also the D1 had the round front master cylinder cup and not the trapizoid one. I called a local shop today and they said they have the phish if I want to look at them and find all of the differences as they are listed on there. I will try and do that when I am up there.

Oddly enough, I have a headlight switch on my Z1R, and it was made in 7/77 and a very nice, LOW frame number. hehehehe.

D1 from my understanding were the 78 SR produced in the calender year of 77 (Serial numbers which would not have exceeded probably 4000 or so) and had an on/off switch for the headlight. D1A were the 78 SR's which were manufactured in 1978. In 78 Feds mandated that the headlight must stay on, so the on/off switch was removed. However, there is still a spot on the handlebar switch casing where the on/off switch would go. Even on Abbie's LTD, there is the spot where the on/off switch would go, if it had one.

Again, this is to the best of my knowledge, so there is room for error.

Let us know what the microfiche shows. I went through a Kawasaki parts catalog that covers both models and it only showed those couple of difference (exhaust, carbs). My D1 does have the trapezoid MC though, and it doesn't list as being different for the D1A. I don't remember if my headlight switches or not. I'll have to check the next time I'm at the storage garage. I also want to double check the model on the frame sticker and also the manufacture date. I only have the title to go by right now. I just got this bike back after selling it to a friend over 20 years ago.

Another note - I recently ended up with 2 manuals for the 650 (over anxious bidding on eBay:whistle: ) and one covers model years 77-79 (and only the D1 version) and the other the 78-80 models (and only the D1A version). This seems to support the general belief that the D1 was an early version with an earlier manufacture date. Of course, none of this is really important, but I do find it interesting!:)
