Who here runs at the strip? was created by fuzzwardo
Who runs drag races and what do you run (bikes and times)? My buddy is all hyped up and wants to run at the drag strip in our area and wants me to play too. What do you have to do to your bike to pass inspection? Safety wire or anything like that like you do for road racing? We would like to start on a low budget so if we don't like it, we don't lose a bunch of money.

I was racing my 1000 before the tear down. I had really low compression and a broken cam chain guide. I was only running in the 15's. :( But with 26's and around 110 psi per cylinder whadda ya want? The tech at our local track is a joke. They were more concerned about my jacket than my bike. I didn't have a chain gaurd or headlight (at the night races) but always got checked for a jacket and boots because I would show up wearing shorts and flip flops. You can try calling the track and check to see what the require for tech. i have never heard of having to safety wire a street bike for bracket racing but you never know. different tracks require different things. Make sure you get video!

Dixon, huh? Well, that means you would probably be racing at Byron, huh? I race there a few times a year. What type of bike will you be running?
Will be there in a couple weeks. There will be a bike drag event by 2 Wheel Speed called Hardcore on Sept. 8-9. Gates open at 8 a.m. and runs begin at 10 with elim. at 1 p.m. They have classes you can run in but also the track has test-n-tune at the same time. That would be best for you to start out in. Byron's tech basically consists of showing up! If you come down to Cordova to run, then it is more involved. They are a NHRA track. They (and most tracks) will want to see your leathers and helmet. Helmet must be Snell2000 (it will have a tag on the inside of the helmet). If you are running 120 mph or faster, you will need full leathers that zip together. Slower than 120 mph you will need a leather jacket, leather boots/shoes above the ankles and leather gloves. Stock bikes are basically good to go. I run my KZ and it runs 11.7's or so. Also have a turbo that runs 9.8's. You don't have to do anything to the bike, just be sure it is safe. Byron is VERY relaxed on tech issues. Once you get there, there will be others there that would be glad to tell you or show you what to do. Show up, enter, pay attention to how others run and you can pick up a lot. Bike racers are a friendly bunch and we were all beginners once, so we understand where you will be at! Come on out and play. Have some fun! If needed, ask all the questions you want.

We would like to find a Kz 900 or 1000 to run but its hard finding them around here. I may try my kz 650 just to try it. I really don't want to take my zx9r up yet. My buddy was at Cordova last weekend for the World series of drag racing, I think that is what it was called. He said he saw a Kz 900 that was awesome and it ran really quick and that is what started it all.
thanks for the info about the racing on Sept 8-9. We may go to check things out.

Thanks. Go to the Hardcore race I told you about and you will see a lot more. There are lots of nice looking bikes at these events...new school and old school. Was at the World Series of Drag Racing myself but just watching. Not very many bikes there this year though. If you go to the race in Sept. look me up..I'll be there. I have a black truck and trailer and you know the bikes. I'll be around somewhere.

racer54, are you going to Byron both days or just one?
My sister found me a 1978 KZ1000 over by her that I need to go check out and they are asking a $1000? Is there any thing wrong with the 1978 models or would this be a good start.

I ended up having a really good time at the drags. Couldn't believe how fast the bikes were. The Busa'a and the ZX14s were awesome but nothing compares to the older bikes. We talked to a few people and got some ideas on what we need to do.

Anyone know if there are any more bike events in the near future at Byron or Cordova?

At the end of the month, the weekend of Sept. 29-30, Cordova is having annual "Octoberfest". It is also hosting a traveling 2-day bike event. A class for dragbikes and another, seperate, class for streetbikes. Gates open at 2 p.m. with time trials at 3 p.m.. Eleiminations start at 7 p.m. Not a lot of bikes like at Byron, but a few that normally don't show on a weekly basis. Hard to say though. First event had a few more than last one but hard to tell how many will show. There'll be at least one street bike there...me. Come join the fun!

I got to the strip but not on my bike. I have seen some crazy fast bikes out at the local drags.
