Did Kawa make such an animal? I saw this
on ebay and it looked like my SR in red. So I emailed the guy and asked for the VIN and he wrote back that it is KZ650D01xxxx which I THINK makes it an SR. It has all the other looks of an SR , so what is the correct info??

Yep, that's an SR for sure.

The LTD's didn't come around until the early 80's, and their side covers (as well as the CSR covers IIRC) are the same (minus emblems of course) as the SR side covers.
Soooo, obviously somewhere along the line someone simply added an LTD side cover onto it.

In 1980 the D morphed into the E model which was then known as the Ltd 650 (single front disk brake, drum rear brake). Since it is a D, it is an SR.

Well I just hit it with an opening bid of $250.00 but I haven't met his reserve:angry: . Doesn't look like it would take too much to get it going again and the miles are low. I guess I'll have to watch it and see what it does over the next few days. Detroit isn't all that far and I'm trying to buy a 1000 LTD in Flint so maybe I can do a 2 for one pickup. The only thing that concerns me is that the owner thinks he has something really rare, so he may be nuts as to what he thinks it is worth.

Looks like an 1979 SR to me too, except for the color. I didn't know that red was available for the '79 model. Mine is that brownish/purplish color that seems to be more common.
Good luck on your bidding.

Red was available in '79. I suspect that the Ltd sidecover was added somewhere along the line as a replacement.

I certainly wouldn't consider it to be rare.

The limiteds were obviously made around the 80's since the one in my pic has that silver kawasaki cover in front of the forks, but his was probably like mine made in late 79, and has mixed parts. The LTDS are a definate rare find and are like the SR's but have that gold striping. I can't remember where I got that picture, anyone have that address for the history of 650's, not 650info, its another one

The 650LTD was a 1 yr only model in 1980, so there aren't many of them. Probably for good reason as for all intensive purposes it was really just a standard SR minus the good triple disc brakes. By 1980 SR had already been out 2 yrs so it wouldn't be a great selling feature in 1980 to say "Wow look at the 'new' LTD, just like last years SR model but with cheapo brakes". Probably a cheaper price to offset the lack of brakes was the main selling feature. The bike this guy is selling though is not an LTD, it's an SR with a "rare" LTD sidecover. That makes it worth more I'm sure :S

No Ron, it has the limited tank so it is a limited, but it has those triple disk brakes so it is confusing to me now

I'm not all that familier with the SR family, so if it is actually the LTD tank, that was also just swapped on the bike. Every 650LTD would carry an 85mph speedo plus the mentioned brakes. I had a 1980 KZ650LTD for a yr or 2 that was wrecked that had perfect bodywork. If I would have had an SR with beat paint I sure would have swapped on the LTD stuff and that's what the deal is here.
