My understanding was that ball spring in the oil filter cavity is there as a bypass to the oil filter in case it gets clogged; an emergency valve to keep the engine from self destructing.

I don't see a need to remove the pressure relief valve from the pump, as not only has it been specifically designed for the Z but it also opens at an oil pressure higher than what the motor requires.  This valve will really only be active in cold weather riding until the oil heats up.

This article goes into some detail regarding the oil bypass valve and the rationale of the Kawasaki engineers back in the 70s.

I also realized that my dumbass put the oil pump o ring in upside down. Thankfully I haven't put oil in yet so it will be a clean fix.

Got the new metal neutral sensor in today.

Touched up the paint on the yoshimura exhaust.  Some day I may get it ceramic coated.
I've installed longer studs to make it easier to get the exhaust nuts on, but even still this exhaust is hugely frustrating to get mounted. I suppose that's what happens when you get a hand-made item.

bolted up the new sensor:

changed up the connector:

I also found this stuck to the exhaust... need to figure out which wheel it came off of. Who knows how long it's been hanging out on there.

I filled the bike with oil and primed the system by cranking it over a few times.  Tomorrow we'll take if for a ride and try a hot-start to see if I've solved the oil light issue.
