Popped the valves off last night, and couldn't find anything extremely obvious on cylinder 2 that would cause a compression loss. There was a decent amount of carbon built up, but the valve seats looked OK. Seals on 1 & 2 are bad for sure.

The valve guides on the intake side seemed pretty good, but there was a little more play with the exhaust valve guides. What's the impact if I don't replace the guides right now? I'm not opposed to tackling this myself if needed, would just need to buy a driver.

On a side note, the spark plug threads on #2 are a little buggered up, so there's more resistance pulling the plug. However it still goes in and torques OK.

Cylinder looks OK at a glance (once again more carbon), No major scoring or gouges from what I can tell. If I shine a flashlight on it, I can see some vertical marks, but doesn't seem too bad, though I'm no expert. Nothing that I could even catch a finger nail on, felt completely smooth. While waiting on some parts for the head, I decided to take a break from the engine.

I pulled the set of Z1 forks from the dragbike and got to polishing. After about 3 hours total with a rag and some white diamond polish, they shined up pretty well!

Next was to fit some new rubber to an original Z1 front wheel. Included a brand new tube & some Dyna beads. It was ready to mount up after installing some new dust covers on the forks.

I was also able to rob the Z1 front rotor & caliper from the dragbike. I cleaned the surface rust on the rotor with a wire wheel and touched up the paint nicks. I still need to order the correct amber reflectors for the front.

I ordered some new intake valves off eBay, but the wrong ones were shipped, so I still have a while to wait to get the correct ones.

I'm still deciding if I want to go a size or two over on the pistons to freshen it up there as well. I'll need to measure the stock Z1 head gasket I have to check to see if that will work.

While waiting (again) for the valves, I got the new spitfire mounted on a stock rear wheel from a '75. I have a new found anger for rim locks!

Found a pretty good combo to polish the hubs with - Buff Magic polish on a wheel, followed up with Mother's billet by hand. Turned out pretty well! Even better in person

I was about to mount up the new rear wheel last night, but found the mag that was on the back had a smaller rear axle. Once again back to eBay to get a Z1 axle...

Note my advanced redneck motorcycle stand, consisting of 3 jack stands :silly:

Finally starting to look like a bike again! Spent several hours cleaning & polishing the rear wheel, have that mounted up.

Also found a nice Craftsman motorcycle jack for $25 at a garage sale, so my redneck setup is no more. Love this time of year!

Does anyone have a recommendation on someone to bore the block near the Detroit area? Willing to drive a reasonable distance. Also travel to I also travel to Grand Rapids & Toledo often.

I put a telescoping T-style bore gauge down and did my best to get a decent measurement, and cylinder #2 was consistently showing a measurement of 66.47-66.49mm, which would put it way outside the spec limit. I'm looking to order a .5mm oversize set from Z1E to keep it stock.

Bike is coming along great!
I'd let the engine builder order the parts.

This may be a non-starter, but there was a machine shop in Taylor, Mi that had a good reputation. Haven't lived in the area for a long time though. But may be worth sending out some feelers about them. They do high performance work. Dave (StreetfighterLTD) would probably have a more qualified recommendation for the Detroit area. Or you can inquire with Les Holt, one of our vendors here who is the owner of PDM Fabrication / Machine. Look in the vendors section, he mentions that he is willing to help take on some engine work. You can also reference his ad at the bottom of this page for contact information. Good luck.
