1980 KZ1000 Z1R Turbo: Resto Dragster
11 Mar 2014 17:51 - 19 Jun 2014 12:48
1980 KZ1000 Z1R Turbo
This is our Z1R project. My dad and I picked this up from Ebay, summer of 2013. Barely running, kind of slapped together, and practically no documentation or known history on the bike. Trailered it back to Florida, and barely made it home before we stripped it down to nothing. Not having any intention of doing so, we found ourselves starting a restoration/build on this bike. 8 months later, we're almost back to a rolling bike. Doing all the work at home (minus powder coating/ceramic coating), all fab was done by my father and his staff in their machine shop. We will post updates as we make some progress.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think factory Z1R-TC's only came out in '78-'79. We were lucky that the original ATP (american turbo pak) parts were used when this bike was pieced together by the previous owner. If anyone has any knowledge about this bikes previous life, please feel free to chime in. Enjoy the build.
Sandblasted frame (Cut off center stand mounts shortly after this photo)
Sketch for the eventual custom seat
Degreeing Cams
Fully painted and ready to seal up. (Even though we ended up sandblasting and polishing most of the covers after all)
Mocked up. 1428cc ready to get mounted back in its frame.
Back from the powder coaters
This was a fun moment
Oil Cooler mounted
Mocking up/measuring for oil lines etc..
Modified oil send/return
Custom oil temp fitting
Bought this crappy attempt at an exhaust on Ebay as a template. Finished product will be tighter to the block
Getting close to final assembly.

Welcome , I Love Turbo Kaws !!!!
I will be watching very closely. From your sketch I assume you are keeping it mostly for drag racing .

Where in the heck is that DRUEL icon!!! Some people don't have a clue but if it's a Z1R, it's supposed to be a turbo. Those that weren't, were mistakes!!!
I have 3 complete Z1Rs and every one of them will be turbos when I'm done.

Motor Assembly pics will be up tonight.
We are building this bike under the technical advice of Mike from New Age Cycles, in Opa-Locka Florida. He is our go to guy with questions or hard to find parts. All engine machining also performed at New Age Cycles. Have nothing but good things to say about that shop. Mike does great work.
To answer the previous question, this bike will be mostly for weekend fun. We might run it down the track at WPB raceway (formerly Moroso Motorsports park) to see what she can do.
Motor specs:
MTC 1428cc Turbo pistons (7.9 comp ratio)
Wiseco big bore cylinder
Stock head
Stock cams
Cams degreed to:
Intake: 110
Exhaust: 112
ATP intake manifold
ATP Ray Jay turbo (rebuilt)
S&S Super B Carb
Low profile breather cap
One off Fabricated oil send/return unit
Added front mount oil cooler
Added electric starter/provisions for starter (bike was previously kick only)
MSD coil
Mallory Fuel pump
Mallory belt driven distributor
MRE clutch cover
Pics coming soon.

Did you happen to pick that bike up in Tennessee? I'm almost certain I saw than one listed locally on craigslist.
