new cafe racer finished... now how do I sell it?

I just finished my latest cafe racer and was wondering if anyone has suggestions as to where I can get top dollar. I enjoy building these bikes and always have two or three bikes under construction but for the first time my buyer fell through and I need to sell. I usually design and build these bikes with a buyer already lined up. Once again... any suggestions?

List it on Ebay and Craigslist with the other 49,000 home built "cafe" bikes. If you want top dollar, you need to be clean and extremely different. Like:

Well thats a 550 zephyr, so worth more than a KZ550. What do you feel is top dollar? Like the man said, list it on eBay and craigslist all across the country. List it up for the price you want, but be prepared to wait. THe right buyer might take a while to come along.

:laugh: Truer words were never written. Keep in mind, there's some stiff competition out there. Here's an example - 50cc mini trail bike cafe racer; 25 bids up to $2125 so far, and the reserve is not met. :blink: :blink: Who knows how much someone with too many dollars and not much sense will pay??

Personally, I think I might list it on ebay with a real high reserve price. It probably won't sell that way, but it might give you a better idea on what the market might bare. Then you could re-list with a reasonable pricing structure. Ebay probably gets you the most perspective customers.

Plan b should be to try and sell to a more targeted audience. Here's a link to Cafe Racer Magazine's web site: caferacermag.com/ They also publish a paper magazine, which should have classified section. You might try and advertise it there. That gives you the best shot at a guy who's interested in a custom.

As I'm sure you know, cafe racers are a very personal/subjective thing. It's much easier to move a correct stock bike than anything custom, but that's not to say it can't be done.

I would never build a custom for sale unless I had a specific buyer who placed a significant, non-refundable deposit on said bike. Sounds like your specific buyer flaked out. Sorry to hear that. Good luck with your sale.

hmmm... good point. That however is no cafe racer in the picture. that my friend is a bratstyle bike with big tires. Very clean but it probably took around two hours to build. Still i must agree that is a nice looking bike. Maybe I should throw some fat tires on my bike and get a few more dollars for it.

The fat tire look is big right now. I like it on most bikes, sometimes its shit.

The guy that built these sells them on Ebay time to time. This burgundy one sold for 7-8k IIRC. There's a ton of detail work and handmade parts. So unless you have pixie dust, you're not building one in two hours.

The bike has 17000 original miles and has been really well taken care of. Always garaged, great shape all the way around. I took it to a shop and asked them to go over the bike when I bought it and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I had the carbs professionally synced when I put on the pod filters and yoshimura exhaust. when I painted the bike I actually felt bad because the paint was in such good condition. I had the tank professionally sealed with the red sealer which as I was told is the best. I hand built the tail-section from the old tail section to stay somewhat true to the oringinal design of the bike. The Zephyr was originally produced as a retro racer and I thought it just needed some minor tweaks to have a real nice cafe racer. If you want a price hit me up on the pm and I will give you a reasonable but firm price. I will say that the original buyer I put this together for was going to spend $6500.00. When he backed out due to a new addition to his family I kept a good portion of his deposit which is why I would be willing to go a little lower in price. By the way the paint job is 3 weeks old and was done by Gary Best Kustoms which is a show quality finish. I have not been able to find a painter that could do a better job.
