Well I took another look at it today. (I keep it at my lady's parents place since they have over 30 acres. Enough land to work on mine her her new KZ650)
Put a freshly charged battery. I cleaned the terminals pretty quickly and turned the key. Nothing. No lights or turnover.
I did do the screwdriver contact touch on the solenoid though. It turned over pretty healthy.
Electrical is definitely not my area of expertise. What do I check next? I took some pictures, Ill see about uploading in a bit

raven, if you can give some more details someone here should be able to help you sort it out. You indicated you are not seeing any lights when turning on the key? If no oil light, make sure the lead going to the oil pressure switch is connected (next to the cam chain tensioner below the carbs). How about your neutral light? As for the starter button not working, it could be the switch itself or the solenoid. Check out your FSM on how to check. And oh, by-the-way. Since it is cranking for you, an easy way to find out if your ignition system is somewhat working is to spray a couple of squirts of starting fluid in the bore of each carburetor and then crank it and give some throttle. Should fire up for a second or two if you have any spark at all. Good morale booster to hear your resto roar to life.

I tried the starting fluid, but it didnt roar to life
Well, lets put it this way. When I turn the key to the on position, it is as if I had the key in the off position. There is nothing at all

When you try to start it be sure to pull in the clutch lever because there is a safety lockout. Ed

19 Oct 2011 11:36 - 19 Oct 2011 11:38Perhaps the ignition switch suffers from internal corrosion.ravenz07 wrote: I tried the starting fluid, but it didnt roar to life

If not already done, could spray inside the key hole with Deoxit electrical cleaner (from Radio Shack), then use the key to work the ignition back and forth. Repeat several times.

If a replacement ignition is needed, may be available from Z1 Enterprises.

I suppose it is a possibility, it wont hurt to try.
Something tells me it is electrical though. It almost seems as though someone was going through wires.
After I turned the key the first time and all the lights came on, I noticed two or three wires weren't connected. One of them being a white wire that I think would be the main fuse

I tried pulling in the clutch to see if it would start. Wouldn't start. Pulled the plug out, no spark. (This is all with the solenoid)

Re: 1983 KZ750
19 Oct 2011 23:14Here is the same pics but I have highlighted a few things.
(1) This wire is not connected to anything, just a loose black wire
(2) Another non connected wire
(3) I am pretty sure I remember this not being hooked up to anything when I first turned the key and the lights come on. Interesting since should be the main fuse right?
(4) Not sure what is going on here but it looks pretty thrashed
