glad you got the parts.
i would use the thinnest ones i had to start with just so you can get some measurements and get a reference to start from.

Another small item off the check list. I shaved the stock fender mounts and made a bracket off the caliper bracket. very pleased with how it turned out. Just need some cool fasteners to finish the front end off. I was thinking about 12 point flange bolts for the fork/caliper bracket. Maybe some button or allen head screws for the caliper and disk? Any suggestions on some trick hardware?

Vic,
Yamaha uses some very nice gun drilled bolts to mount the front calipers on the first generation R1. I've used them for years and they are cheep. I also use a lot of A4 grade stainless allen bolts from McMaster. If I install them in a high viability area I true up the OD on my lathe and cut the heads to a 10 degree taper and polish them with a scotch-brite wheel, they look a lot like titanium when done.
Nice work so far! Are those EBC front rotors?

That is what i'm talking about, thanks! Those bolts are sweet, looks like Yamaha used them all the way to 2013 on many bike models, so only $2.54 brand new. They appear to be 10mm bolts, but I cant seem to find what pitch they are. Its japanese so I assume 1.25?
The rotors are custom ISR, to get enough offset to use the twin pot Grimecas on a spoked wheel. They do look remarkably similar to the EBC ones.

Yes, the Yamaha caliper bolts are 10mm X 1.25. ISR parts are very nice, their hand controls are on my wish list!

Thanks again 80B4 for the tip on those bolts. they are perfect. i like how they match the anti rattle bobbins in the disk. I also got some there stuff for the forks as these are only 30mm long. I blew WAY too much money on fasteners. Thank god i don't have kids; i would be a terrible father.

Thanks guys. I should have a solid update soon, I have been waiting on parts and dealing with painting. I was trying to use POR-15 Hardnose paint on my frame, and i just couldn't get a satisfactory finish with it even after several attempts and contacting their tech support. Its very finicky, although it seems like really tough, good paint. I dropped my frame off for powder coating and should be getting it back monday, then final assembly can begin!!! :woohoo:

Those 10mm bolts look very good in that location! The union bolts that Yamaha uses on early R1 brake lines are interesting too. They are allen bolts instead of a normal hex head.

I was hoping to have the engine in the frame for this update, but... I was degreeing the cams when i discovered the cam chain was too short, did some research and found that the MKII motor uses a 124 link chain. I bought the wrong one with 122 link, probably back when i thought i had a 78 motor. This means total teardown to install the correct chain. :( Sometimes i wonder if there is something or somebody out there secretly conspiring to keep me from finishing this project. But seeing as this is my fourth time taking it apart/ putting it back together i think i will be able to do it in an afternoon once i have the cam chain.


Some good news; I ended up powder coating the frame gloss black, and it was probably one of the smarter decisions i have made so far. White was just too overpowering for some of the other cool stuff going on, also a nightmare to keep clean. I also did my first bit of TIG welding on this and finished the foot for the kick stand. I still need to find a stainless ball bearing to weld on the end like the stock kickstand.

Looking very good! so far, take your time and finish it the way you like it, don't rush it, time is all we have in this world.
I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.
