Galactica wrote: Now I am in a dilema. The 73 Z1 appears to have 76 engine cases. Lot's of the 73 bits are there although in very rough shape. Like the carbs, front shocks (may be too rust pitted), tank, side covers, duck tail, gauges, foot pegs, tail light (the signal lights are gone), air box.

I'm not sure it's worth restoring without the Z1 cases. Any thoughts guys?

Thanks,
Ross

Zedder seems to confirm 1973 Z1 frame and KZ900-B1 LTD engine cases.

I know where I can get 74 engine cases, but that's not quite good enough.

If you are planning to sell it in one day, maybe not. But if you will keep it, you should do whatever make you happy.
I picked up pretty messy 75 Z1 no title for $350. Found 74 title, got most of missing/replacing parts from Z1E, fixed it up (still not done)with 74 body color and I'm happy with it. I am keeping it.
Besides it will get harder to find them. If you can get it with good deal, maybe good idea to get it to just sit on it for awhile.

not necessarily, there are those which had the motors replaced by dealerships when a motor blew, maybe not numbers close but still a much better option

In your first post you mention a slew of other bikes. If the current wner is the one doing the swapping, make sure he doesn't have the correct Z1 Engine in one of the other bikes, or stashed in a pile of parts.

If you do get the bike, you can start your resto on the chassis, and start searching for engine cases. You have roughly a 400 number span of cases that would be considered 'correct'.

Jeff,

I've decided to pick up the bikes, and proceed in a haphazard manner. Actually I'll begin with the stuff I can do without proper engine cases as you suggested. The current owner may be BS-ing, and claims not to have known that the engine is from a 77 kz900, but I have no reason to disbelieve him. I tend to take people at their word.

As an aside, I have a 77 kz1000 frame #00523*, engine #00840* and a 76 kz900 frame #09007*, engine #09141*. I am certain that these are the original frame/engine combinations, yet they are well outside of the "acceptable" range of number differences, 3270 and 1340, respectively. Did the range increase as years went by? Or am I out to lunch?

Here's a shot in the dark... ANY ONE OUT THERE HAVE SPARE '73 Z1 900 ENGINE CASES?

Cheers,
Ross

Craig,

Now that you have let the cat out of the bag that you have spare 73 engine cases, the question is, "What would it take for you to part with them?"
