Ugh, has it been 3 months since my last post??? I squeeked out a bit of progress this weekend. Detail work really, but time consuming and a little tedious which is why I think I was procrastinating :pinch:

Once upon a time I had to modify the rear motormount gussets above the swingarm. While figuring out the easiest way to repair the destruction, I had left off with some gaps on either side of the gussets like so:

These little "gaps" are much too big to fill in with welding wire/rod, but are small and asymetrical enough to be a big PITA to grind out each individual puzzle piece. But today I did just that!

You will notice the tig rod I tacked to the center of each piece. Thats for me to hold it in place while I tack it to the frame like so:

Then tacked to the frame:

And finally, fully welded:

Its nice to get that out of the way! After this post I'm going to go out and finish welding the top subframe mounts, and the main frame will be complete, and ready for weld clean up and paint prep. The subframe is nearly complete as well, still needing passenger peg mounts, and possibly a bracket for the tail light. I have some late model ZX10 passenger pegs, but after some studying, I don't think they will flow right asthetically, so I got some GSXR1000 pegs and see what I can make of that. I'll post pics of each so you all can see and offer input as well.

Thanks DD, I'm glad to be picking up the pieces as well. I need my bike back for more reasons than one.

Finished welding up the top subframe mounts, and snapped a few pics. Damn, I think these are the prettiest welds I've done on the whole bike!!! :woohoo:
Of course, thats not saying much considering the company we keep on this forum, and the master fabricators that put my work to shame

The top left side outer:

The top right side inner:

Now that those are welded up and the swingarm/upper rear motor mount gussets are repaired, I can start grinding and sanding to clean it all up! Now I'm waiting on the new passener pegs to get the mounts figured out. Baby steps.....slow and steads wins the race. I need to jump back into this one.

If you increase the slope down time on the TIG to about 5 seconds you won't get pipes in the end of your welds.

Nice to see an update on the project! :)

slow and steady wins the race, :pinch:  .

you know you are not getting off that easy :woohoo: !

this almost qualifies for

"project abandonment"! :silly:  :P

it prolly already feels like spring out there in LALA land.

it is time for the meat and potatoes of this build to come together.

#1 frame/fab work finished up
#2 brakes and suspension sorted
#3 frame painted
#4 engine assembled and installed
#5 carb and air cleaners worked out(might have to settle for something readily available that will work until you can get some fcr's,you can always swap later.)
#6 exhaust, make something that clears everything and works.you can build the exotipipe of your dreams later and change em out.
#7 bodywork.if you need a steel tank to use until you have a c-f tank ready let me know.
#8 bars and controls.
#9 grips and tires

oh i wished i lived close enough to help you finish this thing out.

comon i'm dieing over here. :woohoo: .

Great list Leon!!!
#1) Frame and fab work complete: To finish the subframe I need the (2nd set) passenger pegs which are enroute.
I keep thinking I should do a nearly complete mock up before I tear the bike back down for paint. That way I make sure I havent forgotten any tabs or brackets I need.....like the shock nitrogen reservoir mount that I just remembered!! :S

The weather as of late has been a little cold out in the garage, but there are some sunny/75-80 degree days coming up in the forcast, so I can get more accomplished.

Yeah Leon, why don't you live closer so I can get a little help to knock this out, huh???? :P ;)

Indeed you did Josh ;) Thanks to Blackbanshee, I remembered I still needed to work out the rear shock nitrogen reservior mount. I contemplated doing the same thing Testerossa did, and mount it to the subframe, but my hose is shorter and it wasn't really working out like I wanted. I figured I'd measure the reserviours diameter (1.806") and get a piece of tubing that I could cut in half to serve as a mount. I scrounged up some 2" .60" wall stainless tubing, cut a 3.5" piece and then cut it in half lengthwise. It fit almost perfectly around the reservior.... but with a little bit of play. Then I wondered if I should have some isolater or dampner so the reserviour isn't rubbing/vibrating against the stainless tubing. I grabbed a chunk of 1/16" EPDM rubber mat I had laying there and presto! It was a perfect interference fit. I don't get lucky like that very often, but I'll take it.
So now, where to mount it? Well, how about the hollow area under the upper shock mount bracing? Its close enough, the hose isn't kinked in some weird way, it looks clean, and it sits back behind the main frame down tubes so i shoudn't have any air filter clearance issues. Whadya think, weld it up?

I really don't see what your hose length has to do with where you mount your reservoir? LOL :silly: :P  :woohoo: I say Tack it for now and see where the rest of the build takes you. It looks good so far.
