That looks cool. I wonder though if it's the actual carbon fiber pattern showing through or a painted on pattern?

Thanks for sharing Leon! To answer the question, it's not a painted on pattern. It is a hybrid weave, with carbon fiber in one direction and red dyed kevlar fibers on the opposite direction. Then they may have tinted the resin red, or dusted it with a pearl coat before cleacoating. Cool effect Leon....Maybe I'll make a set of bodywork just like that...it would look soooo cool!

Thanks Josh, I'll leak test it later today. I needed some fitting that I have to pick up later. Shortly after I finished the vacuum pot, I prepped my right sidecover mould and laminated a sidecover. I demoulded it this morning and it turned out pretty damn good :woohoo: I'd say easily my best part yet B) I'll post a pic in the carbon bodywork thread in a bit.

Mark, a resin catch pot is used in a type of composites construction called "resin transfer moulding" or "resin infusion". In these processes, you layup the fiber reinforcement dry in the mould. This gives you unlimited working time, advantageous when working with a larger mould like, say, a fuel tank. A layer of "flow media" is placed as the last layer on top of the laminate. It lookes like miniaturized expanded steel grate, made out of super thin plastic. You add a spiral cut line on one side of the mould for resin distribution and connect a fesin feed line. Your vacuum line goes on the other side of the part then you bag the part as usual and pull a vacuum on it with the resin feed line clamped. You mix some resin, place the resin feed tube in your resin bucket and release the clamp. The vacuum draws the resin into the mould, and pulls it across the part. In order to insure you get a complete infusion of resin into the part, you must alow some of the resin get pulled into the vacuum line on the other side of the part. (Here is where the catch pot comes in) So that you do not risk getting resin into your vacuum pump and destroying it, your vacuum line comes out of the part and into the resin catch pot before going to you pump. This gived you a reservoir to catch excess resin. I had everything I needed to try a resin infusion except the resin catch pot. I wasn't going to try another fuel tank top until I could experiment with the infusion process, and I wanted to try it out on a tail first. Not having this little pot has been holding me back a bit, but now thats not an excuse anymore :P

no no i mean to sell em...folks are cheap but if the part is sweet it sells ...moriwaki points covers...ect...i was thinking of all the folks around the world with that nice stock outside colors and trick, or trick one offs that retain that cavity still...you tell the guy looking at the bike ...hey wanna see the original tool kit...dont mention the tray...then pull out the owners manual to show him and the carbon fiber shows...sell em like hot cakes...little finish to all those bikes done already....

I like this pic. Remember my idea about cutting up the frame to fit your carbon battery box? You're halfway there! Just put one of those tubes on a hinge or something

Thanks Nelson B) I was disappointed I couldn't use the carbon battery box, but the aluminum one turned out well enough that I don't have a problem with it. Now I have a cool carbon fiber bot to put crap in  Like I need another box to put crap in

Are you gonna order some hybrid fabric and start experimenting? I saw some sweet Neon green kevlar/carbon weave that didn't look too far off kawasaki green. The price was stupidly high though, I'd have to research a better supplier. Something to think about though B)

Wow, nice build man. I spent the last three days reading every post in all 58 pages. I was hoping i would see a finished bike when i get to the end so I just kept reading. Now I'm here and the story is not finished but still being told. It's a double edged sword. Nice work man. I will continue to follow.

Thanks Karmasevo! B) Welcome to KZR! I was hoping to be finished too, but too many irons in the fire :( At the moment, the only thing holding me back from painting the frame is welding in mounts for the passenger pegs. I briefly considered painting the subframe anyway and adding the peg mounts later, but my wife wouldn't forgive me if I did  I really need to get crackin' on that and cleaning up most of my welds to prep for paint. If you haven't already, you'll find lots more reading on the swingarm installation in a separate chassis forum thread I started, as well as a couple of threads on the bodywork construction in the paint and body forum. I can dig up the links if you need. Again, welcome to the club ;)

Adam,

Thanks for the welcome. I will dig up the other threads. I have read three full builds now with you and Testarossa's build being two of them. Sending you a PM about something else so I don't hijack your thread.

I'm flattered, but there are much better, and more complete project threads available to learn from, written by members far more talented than myself, testarossa's being one of them. At least you get some closure reading his thread
