I think an o-ring would look cleaner B)

With no ring groove to retain it? Plus those little socket head cap screws don't really have a wide enough flange to compress the o-ring, do they?

I used a normal hinge, and tapped a screw into the oil filter shroud. that way there was no hole drilled externally, therefore no seal required.B)
If u use a long screw , it can double as a gate stop. then use a nut to lock the hinge against the shroud. add a little lock-tight as u go, and Valhalla.
The screw protruded into the filter area. You'll never guess how i resolved this catastrophe.
Are u ready for this?

I took my trusty grinder out of my holster and trimmed that nasty screw. Then i trimmed my nails with it.

Breaking news.

This morning, from a cave somewhere in Pakistan, Taliban Minister of Immigration, Mohammed Omar,

warned the United States and Canada that if military action against Iraq and Afghanistan continues,
Taliban authorities will cut off America's and Canada's supply of convenience store managers.

And if this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next, followed by Visa, Bell
and Rogers customer service reps.

It's getting ugly folks. :P

That's just below the belt! Now they're fighting dirty!
You truly are a magician with an angle grinder Mark
And Josh, giving up on my o-ring idea because it might not work right? Bah! Use a longer button head cap screw, chuck it in a lathe and cut a groove, then cut the screw down.......or do like Mark suggested

Jeez, he's all about the machining and then starts whining about not being able to just screw on some hinge without modification! :woohoo:

OK, OK, I see how it is. I step away from the computer for a few hours to do this strange thing called work. That's what real men do to earn money. The kind of work where you get your hands dirty while making actual, tangible goods for sale, thus keeping revinue in the good ole USA. Sorry Canadians, we love you too. In the meantime all you boys with money countin' hands decide to pile on. Well I'm here to tell you that the Sheriff is back in town.

So am I wrong or is this the guy who just moved back in with mommy and daddy and the diaper genie calling me out? Your lack of lathe skills is self evident. You want me to cut an o-ring groove in a cap screw HA HA! Or use a pan head screw. Ever try to chuck on that head? So we're left chucking on the threads and then using our back face grooving tool. Can you get that one at Harbor Freight? The groove should be in the pan, but then you would have to chuck the pan in the lathe. I know how to do it. Do you? Four jaw chuck anyone. Or we could set it up in a mill on a rotary table, or just interpolate the groove on a cnc mill. Would you care to give me the G code for circular interpolation? I have as much time on a lathe this month as you two do in both of your lives and you propose to tell me how to make an o-ring groove in a place that obviously calls for a flat seal.

For the record, I'm with Mark on this one. I'm not a fan of putting the screw though the bottom of the pan. Too many failure modes there engineers. If that nut was to vibrate loose, then you get to remove the oil pan to re-attach. Screw head fails in shear due to contact with external force. Remove the oil pan. Galvanic corrosion between the steel screw and the aluminum pan. Any of these failure modes includes the wonderful side effect of lost oil, potential engine failure, and a supremely lubricated rear tire. If Marks screw fails in any of these modes, then its "Oh shoot, my oil gate is laying in the bottom of the pan. I guess I'll have to limit my wheelies."

JUST KIDDING! Please don't get your feelings hurt. Tongue firmly in cheek here. I actually enjoy this. Bring it on! Mark is the man! I'm going camping. No progress this weekend. Peace and hair grease. OBTW I washed my truck today, check out the shine.
