Well I got them all cleaned. Then I decided to purchase a set of K&N filters that notaduc had for sale here. He bought oversized filters an made some slick delrin velocity stacks that adapt the larger filters to the Mikuni carb throats. I have to open the counterbore a bit on the velocity stacks to fit the 29's. I got two of them done an then had to go to Connecticut for three weeks. Once I get caught up on honey-dos and fishing trips :) I'll get them finished and back on the bike.

Ok, I got back at it today for a little while. Carbs re-assembled with Notaduc's velocity stacks and K&N filters fitted.

Now with the carbs cleaned out the bike starts right up again. I went for a little spin around the neighborhood. Then I decided to start looking at the heel guards that I always wanted to cut down, but never did. Here are the stock heel guards:

Now here is my first idea about cutting them down. I traced the stockers on a piece of cardboard, and then sketched a few different ideas on there. Here is what I decided to try out. I had some silver paint in the garage so I sprayed them to get the full effect. What do you guys think?

Those look really nice, and a lot better than the stock slabs. Of course, your whole bike is awesome.

i like the way the right side has the lines going at the same angle as the fins on the engine.

make the left side lines go the same and they would be perfect  ,in my mind anyways :P !!!

Good call. I made the left side first and I actually had the lines on the left side lined up with the top line of the rearset. That didn't work on the right side so I did what I did. Maybe I'll try another template with this idea.

Your rearsets look like the stock ones off of my old 05 zx6.

And the heel guards look a lot like the sato racing rearsets that I had on it too.

I really like what you're going for with your templates, And making them certainly beats buying the insanely expensive racing ones

Your build thread is awesome!
I've been watching it for a while now.
I like your rear set adapter plates. Are you happy with the location of your rearsets? I am no machinist but a friend of mine just got a mill and one of the things I am thinking of trying to make is plates like you made. I never had adjustable rearsets until the Sato's in my picture but it was awesome to be able to change position and check it for comfort immediately after. Did you mess with the positioning of yours when you made them? It seems like it would be just as easy to make a set of adjustable adapter plates with a bunch of different holes and settle on exact position after the fact.

Yep I'm happy with the position. If you look far enough back in this thread I had built some steel rearsets that didn't work out perfectly. Those did teach me where I wanted these to go. Also I have a ZX-10r that I can always jump on to get a quick idea of riding position. Obviously this bike is a bit different as I want to be sitting more upright. Also you could make adapter plates with multiple holes that would allow you to change up the position. It will take a bit of calculation to get your hole positions right so that the rearsets line up correctly. I say go for it. Aluminum is fairly cheap and it is a forgiving material to learn on the mill with. About the only thing that machines easier is brass.

BTW the rearsets I'm using came from a second gen ZX-10r. Hence the similarity to your ZX-6r. And thanks for the kind words.

Well it isn't much, but I got my new chrome super bike bars fitted tonight. Just my luck, I have a boatload of new parts coming in and I'm going out of town for the weekend.

Well it's not shiny chrome, but hopefully the stainless will weather a bit better in the long run. Not to mention it's a good $140 cheaper than a Chrome Kerker, and Chris at Motogpwerks is a pleasure to deal with. I just got my hands on it today.

I'll probably have to fit it, and then take it off to have a O2 sensor bung welded in for me. I don't currently have the facilities to weld stainess. I'll try and hang it on the bike to get some pictures this week if time permits.

Well I couldn't stand it, so I started trying to fit the new pipe. I knew there would be some considerations due to the custom nature of my bike, but it actually fits pretty close. I need to make a slight mod to my rearset adapter plate so I can tilt it forward a touch. Then I will need to drill and tap the rearset for a stud to attach the tab on the tailpipe. That should just about do it. Obviously, I'm doing this to get the pipe as tight to the frame as possible. I cannot afford to have the pipe hanging too low. Thankfully the pipe crosses over the middle of the frame instead of running down the right side of the frame like my other exaust. I should actually have some cornering clearance on right handers now!

Here's what happened to my old pipe when I tried to go into a right hand turn very hard:

Attachment IMG_0857.JPG not found

And a couple of shots of the bike with the new exaust test fitted. Sorry about the poor lighting, the sun went down before I got done.

Attachment IMG_0855.JPG not found

Attachment IMG_0856.JPG not found

Now I just need to make a couple of tweaks to gain a bit of ride height, and the bike will sit perfect.
