Hello from SoCal
02 Oct 2026 09:52
Hey all!
About a year ago, I picked up a 78' KZ1000D1 Z1-R from an estate sale. Seemed to be garage parked, but last registered in 82'
It's definitely been a journey getting it all back in order, but it's been a lot of fun and a big learning experience. Never worked on anything air cooled and carbureted before until now.
It's almost fit enough to get on the road, here's to some fun times ahead!

Welcome from Torrance! Where in So Calif are you?
That bike looks like a real find. Hopefully, unmolested. Old is easier to fix when nobody F'ed with it.

Hey, Thank you! I'm down in San Diego.
It seems to be in good condition. Just 22.5k miles on the odo. I believe I'm the 2nd owner, previous owner knew a thing or two cuz this was one of 3 other Kawasakis on the property! Rear was disassembled somewhat when I bought it, I believe for the rear brake rebuild I'm doing now. Any parts taken off were meticulously organized, and proper storage precautions were undergone. Wasn't too hard to put everything back together.
The worst part that could be considered eff'd up would be the distributor points. Every screw in there was stripped out bad. Luckily I found a new-old Dynatek electric ignition kit alongside all the parts, throwing that in was a breeze! Everything else is bone stock, including the carb and headers.

Just San Diego is all I'll say. Born and raised! Love it here but man these gas prices are rough. Can't wait to be making bike-level MPG soon enough.

Welcome aboard! As said above, that is a really nice find. A nice factory exhaust is really hard to find, and usually shockingly expensive.

Fine bike, nothing done that can't be undone, competent PO's who cared. That's the way to find them! Jus' gotta be right place/right time.
