Kz900 Restore or sell..what's it worth these days
18 May 2025 10:19 - 20 May 2025 13:52
Trying to decide ifni should restore or sell this as is..don't really ride any more and have a ton of other projects anyway..got it when my dad passed away in 2017..had been sitting for years in his garage. I cleaned carbs about 5 yrs ago and had it running but needed to sync carbs etc and didn't get any further. Got busy with kids and life..has sat since.put a short video of it the night I got it running years ago .looking for value ideas if I sold it as is etc.

Ct, while the KZ900 was indeed a Fantastic machine, they just don't bring the funds of the earlier Z1's or even the 1977 1000. Your 900 at least has the original airbox but does it have the snorkel? And while all those saddlebags/Windjammer/LTD seat/engine guards/custom paint/exhaust may (seem) to add value, they actually do the opposite. I have a personal KZ900 that has everything OEM redone but haven't assembled it yet, worth more in individual parts then as a whole. Restore is a loaded word, can take on different connotations for different folks. If that were mine, i wouldn't bother removing all that hardware and just sell it as-is. Around here in Kansas, probably a 3K OBO bike. If top tier restored, none of that Z1 Enterprises or Z1 parts Aftermarket stuff, maybe 8-10K. The KZ900 has always been the Odd-Ball and hardest to forecast value.

I agree with Clay. If you're not going to keep it, be aware you may not recover the money you put into it in any "restoration". If you decide not to sell, it looks to be in decent shape. In that case, revive what needs to be done (tires, brakes, tune up) and enjoy riding.

Looks like an old police model judging by the floor boards, pipes, rear bags and guards. I had one of those back in then day and turned it into this.

If it were me it would be priceless if my dad cherished it and I hope my son feels that way when I'm gone.Just my 2 cents.

It's kind of a different situation..my parents got divorced when I was young..dad kinda wrote me and my brother off...didn't do anything with us..only reason my step mom and her kids didn't want it was because it didn't run..she was gonna let scrappers take it..on one hand its the only thing I got out of the deal .yes i have child hood memories but on another it reminds me of other bad things every time I look at it and upsets me too..torn but leaning towards just selling it and closing that book of my life.complicated story with alot more to it but that's the gist..

At the risk of sounding like "Dear Abby", same situation here too. I was raised by my Grandmother and never got a wooden nickel from my Biological Father. This was back in the 60's when Child Support wasn't really enforced. I'm still running across Half-Brothers and Sisters my sperm donor "dad" produced and split when it came time to raise/support them. As a kid you wonder what you did, and thinking it was your fault. But one grows up and the angst goes away. I'm Super Glad i wasn't raised by my Father, could of only imagined what i would of had to endure!!

If your not emotionally attached to it I would just sell it as is to put money in your pocket.
It would take some effort/dollars to put it back to stock, and no way of telling if you could recoup the investment of time and money.
