Hi guys, im a new kz1000 rider from argentina...
I always dreamed as child with this bike, so the real ride begins now.
i recently got a kz1000 (i traded it for a klr250 and some money) but the bike got some "unknowns" for me.
the bike isnt working (some "ape" removed ther cyl. head and broke 3 screws on the process)
and i think i got some work to do.


The problem with the bike... its that i dont know the exact model of the bike.
(as far as i can see, it's a "USA model" because the smog ports on the valve cover, and i think its a z1r/mk2 from the cradle and engine numbers), the problem there, is that being a 1980 bike it got a contact breaker ignition system, what confuses me in determining what model is the bike, as far as i know, 80's model already got CDI ignition.

I think all of the 1980 1015cc engines, KZ and MKII, had electronic ignition.

The 1980 1015cc engine numbers are----
KZ 1000 A4 -- MKII KZT00AE093001 to 092900 (I bet that is backwards)
or KZT00AE093001 to 110764

KZ 1000 B4 LTD (MKII engine) KZT00AE92601 to 092900
or KZT00AE093001 to 110764

KZ 1000 D3 Z1R-II KZT00DE017616 to 021069

KZ1000 G1 Classic (not MKII) KZT00GE000001 to 003351

KZ1000 C3 Police (not MKII) no info on engine numbers

Your motorcycle is a collectible and if it is in original condition or restored properly it is a bike that demands a good dollar and is only going to increase in value. Naci en Adrogue, Bs.As., ahora vivo en Toronto.

I had a (1981) 1000 J model & it had electronic ignition also had an (80) model 750 & it had the same. I may be a year off on one or the other but contact breakers were not original.

As i know now, the bike its a z1rII, i have a lot of work there, but I will not restore it as factory (money, time), but i will not change the cyclistics on it (rake, offsets etc.) only aesthetic and minor electrical changes.

Does your bike have a 'coffin' shaped fuel tank? If so it is definitely a collectible. I remember them well. They came in a silver/bluish color & were supposed to have a claimed (5) hp. advantage over the standard model. I am jealous of your find. HA!! They were really cool & commanded a lot of attention.
