05 Jul 2012 10:43ADKBurtrubber87, just to be clear. What you are saying is that the '75 is the black one in the middle, right? The one with the pattern on the top of the tank and lester wheels, correct? At first, from your post, I thought you meant that beat up green one.

Lol, no you weren't mistaken..the beat up green one one is a '75 kz900. The darker green/blue in the middle is my '80 kz1000 (the one i'm fixing up.). The black one on the right is a '77 cb550..i actually got all 3 of those for $200..turned around and sold the cb and made all my money back..
Update:
Well i let the mm sit for a few days, in the crankcase, tank and in each cyl. That thing smoked..my god was there alot of smoke when i started it..can't really tell if it runs better yet. I rigged up the clutch and throttle and cruised through a few gears up and down the road..when it did run good it feels healthy ..but it has intermittent misfires/ bogging and popping..the ground straps on the plugs have a light tanish color.. so next step is valve adjustment and ignition..
Can anyone tell me are kz900 shims the same as kz1000 shims?
Best write up?
Does the dyna 2000 use the factory igniters? Or no? I want to eliminate alot of the old wiring and the smog stuff..

Yes, the KZ900 and KZ1000 valve shims should be the same, 29mm shims. Glad to hear you got her going. Sounds like you may have some carb issues or maybe sticking advancer. I would try lubing the advancer first. If it still running bad, try identifying which cylinders are causing the problem. Are all the pipes getting equally hot? Then take another look at the carbs, especially focusing on the ones that were not getting up to temp, if any. Doing at the minimum a valve clearance measurement is always a good idea. Good luck.

Dam, I'd buy the whole thing if you were closer to NYC.

Finally got time to check valve clearance.
Exh. Int
Cyl 1. .004 .003
Cyl 2. .006 .004
Cyl 3 .006 .004
Cyl 4. .003 .004
Tight..but is it tight enough to really effect it? Dont get me wrong, i know they need more clearance but they all have some clearance..
I ohmed the coils..
Across the leads they were about 20 ohms on both.
Hooked the + and - they were both about 1.5-1.7 ohm

What kind of kz1000 parts are you looking for to trade for the Z1-B (the "kz900")?
Were there any other parts thrown in with the Z1 when you got it at the yard sale?

The z1 has been sold for weeks..i actually made money on the whole deal considering i sold the z1 and the cb for $300..
Update on the 1000 though..i just realized that cyl 3 and 4 had ngk b8es plugs..and 1 and 2 have BR8es plugs..which is a big no no, but i got the valve cover and coils all apart..so..valve adjustment, new b8es's, new dyna green coils and dyna copper plugwires..we'll see if she'll run right..might do a poor mans leak down test too..
