The grab handles were for passengers, who had long Monkey arms! You'd need them to reach the grab rails.
They do come in handy for bungie cords, or putting the bike up on the centre stand.
I prefer the look without them, but have kept the one on the left side to help me get her up on the centre stand. I'll be loosing the stand this Winter, so off comes the grab rail.
