Fiberglass Help

Y'all were such a big help with my frist body work project, I was hoping you might be able to help me again

I have been asked to fix an outboard motor cover, and its all fiber glass. I know its not a bike, but...

Now I know i can work with bondo and sand paper, and I am pretty good with a rattle can, but fiberglass. Thats a whole new ball park for me.

Do you have a picture of the damage? That will help with the method of repair.

Nope no pics yet. I just got the call from the Mounted Patrol this morning. I need to go pick the cover up here in a while.

But I was told it has a crack, and is all scuffed up and in really sad shape.

I have worked in a 'glass' shop before.. and we did repair stuff... if its cracked it needs to be reenforced from the back with 'cloth' and make sure you have at least 2" around the crack... make sure you clean the area really good.. and saturate the cloth really well... use a paint brush to work it in.
the gel coat can be sanded and filled with the green body filler...and primered, and be sanded out.... the red will shrink away from the gel coat.
dont mix the resin and hardner to hot.. or it will burst into flames (guess how i know this?) mix it in a 1/2 gallon milk container.. when your done.. let the excess harden and thro it away...

Burst into flames, huh??? I'll bet THATS a good story!!!!!!! Oh to have been a fly on the wall....

I used to smoke...now I only burst into flames a little.

indykawi.. ya it was quite an experience.. there is a fine line between mixing hot and mixing TOO hot.... first you feel the heat it generates, then it will start to smoke... when it smokes is when you know your gettin close.. heave smoke.. and your in trouble.. then Poof.. up in flames....:pinch:

it usuall happened when we were in a hurry to get parts laid-up, cured and out of the molds in a hurry.

Just picked up the cover and boy shes in rough shape.

You have your work cut out for you. Do all the backing first, after cuting that big crack at the bottom so you can put things back where they belong. After the inside is shored up, just go at the outside the way you did your tank...just using different materials. You'll probably surprise yourself at how quickly it goes. Keep us posted! Oh, I see that's duct tape..whatever, and the metal strip above...just get rid of anything that's holding it together, so you can fit the parts up.
