CSR Tailpiece Mod was created by Proxy
Has anybody ever added a B model tailpiece to a CSR? I'm thinking of picking up a 82'650CSR and I have a couple of B model tailpieces. I like the B model and would like to add a tailpiece and get rid of the mini-apes. I'd also like to add a straight 900 seat or a 900 Corbin gunfighter I have hanging around. I also have a 900 tailpiece but I really like the 650 tail better. Anyone have any info on these swaps? Also are DID aluminum spoked rims standard on the CSR?

Well so it can be done. I been looking at it and it looks like I might have to change the whole back fender to be able to ducktail it. The CSR fender looks more shallow. That may also help when I try and mount a straight seat too. I'm just going by pictures here. I will be picking up the CSR tomorrow so I will know better then. Only reason I'm getting the CSR is I want something to ride while I restore a 77 B1 in orig green. I'd like to take my time with the 77. I'll ride the CSR while I do it. But I'm not really into the crusiers all that much. At least not with the apes and stepped seat. I might have a pretty nice K&G sissybar and rack for the CSR for sale if I can fit the ducktail to it.

Hey folks,

today I picked up a full body set for my 1981 Kz650 CSR.
You recall what my bike looks like, here...

Now, the interesting thing is the pieces I picked up are for a 1978 'dark luminous blue' Kz650 'B' model.

So it sounds like there's a history of making the B parts work on the H model (the CSR bikes H1/H2/H3 of 1981/82/83).

I would ask 'what mods are needed' and truth be told the tail section looks the best on the B bike versus the couch-style seat/no tailpiece of the CSR's.

I am concerned whether the 'B' tail section is a direct bolt-on to my CSR's frame (somehow I doubt it).

Also will the B's gas tank fit in the place of my pretty beat-up CSR tank?

I have the CSR seat pan and can always buy a foam+cover from a 'B' model and put that on my CSR seat pan.

I also have the 'B' chrome rear fender to use instead my CSR rear fender *if* the 'B' rear fender will fit...

Truth is I been playing with the idea and I've come to the conclusion the CSR looks better bobbed than with an added tail. At least to me it does. So here is my plan. It should be pretty easy so it won't interfere with my 77 restoration. I hope.
I also have a photoshopped one of adding the tail if anyone cares to see it.

Here is the CSR with tail. I like the bobber better. Your call. By the way I'm not sure it is feasible without using a B model fender too. Also it looked like the frame would get in the way and the seat would be a problem. Not that it couldn't be done. Right now I'm just going by pictures. I'm picking up the CSR today and will know more in a few days.

I have already changed my handlebars -- I have a superbike bar on it with a slightly higher rise than, say, a cb400f stock handlebar ('75 or '76 cb400f, they had a super-low-rise superbike bar).

I also have mag wheels that I have verified are a bolt-on to my CSR -- they come from a 1979 'SR' Kz650 parts bike I got. These mags have a rear drum brake just like the CSR rear wheel.

The 'cruiser' look with the couch seat, wow. I do not have a g/f with a big behind (she is 105lbs, 5' 1") so the couch is out. (I'm still trying to get rid of the couch from my 1980 Z1 classic.)

So today I will test-fit the tank and body parts and see how it all works. As for the forks, I may buy a set of Kz650 'B' forks on ebay or just raise mine upward in the triple tree.

I'll take a photo when I get the parts on there -- thanks for the 'look-ahead' mock-up of the CSR with the tail -- looks better already.

The reason I did not go out and buy a Kz650 'B' is because I paid $50 for my '81 CSR. I plan to morph it if possible then have a cheapass Kz650 B with mags.
I have not found a reasonably-priced vintage Kz650 'B' or 'C' model here in Silicon Valley.

Okay the donor cast wheels are *not* from a 1979 SR -- even though my parts bike has 'SR' side covers, the donor parts bike must in fact be a 1980 'E' model Kz650.

www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Kawasaki_KZ650E

This donor bike is basically just a roller with a kz750 motor installed of dubious value and even less cosmetic appeal.

The 'D' model, aka Kz650 'SR', has mag wheels but has dual front disc brakes and a disc brake on the rear.

The 'E' model parts bike I have must be a 1980 Kz650 LTD.
Wow, Kawasaki was busy on the variations trip with the 650 in those days -- an 'LTD' 650, an 'SR' 650, a 'C' 650, the 'CSR', the 'B' -- means lots of parts availability for years to come.

I'm doing a full restore on this 77 Greenie and will be riding the CSR while it goes on.

I think I will put some european touring bars on the CSR (kind of like the original B bars) and try fitting a solo bobber seat I have from a old Silverwing Interstate. Looks like I will need a new back tire and will need to fashion a backlight/plate holder. The headlight holder is also tweaked but we think we can straighten it. Looks like it had a fall over. Tank has a couple small dings on the outside but looks new inside. Muffler has some acid stains but not bad. She is very dirty tho. First order is a good bath and get off the sissybar and seat. He said he just cleaned the carbs but she don't answer too well and idle is floating around. I suspect he missed the idle circut. All in all she should be a quick project and then I can concentrate on the Greenie. Greenie is going back to mostly stock with the exception of a set of Lester Mags and electronic ignition. Thanks for the replies and good luck with all your projects!
