clear coating brushed metal gas tank?

I like the brushed metal look. Is it a bad idea to remove the paint on the gas tank of my KZ250 project by wirewheel and steel wool and then apply a clearcoat to prevent rusting?

Sounds good to me. The only possible downside is whether or not the clear coat will adhere sufficiently well to the bear metal? Mark Wing might know the answer?

how about applying a clear primer first? Such as Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter

i had to do it barney i couldnt resist is do they skin one of these for bear metal?

I would go for the clearcoating. a good automotive grade clear (NOT SPRAY CAN) will adhere well enough. I wouldn't sand it any finer than about 320 though. the corrosion protection probably wont be very good but it will certainly be better than wax. come to think of it i belive that ppg has a clear primer surfacer that might help the adhesion. You could also have it powder coated, any of these should work, but i would certainly stay away from the spray can stuff.

I do it all the time. It can be done. First off,clean the metal parts after you have brushed or grind them. Use House of Kolor adhesion promoter. I will get the part number for you if needed. Let it dry and clear away. On some custom paint work we also put candy in with the clear giving it a colored affect. Looks great !

Powder coat it... it will stick no prob... the clear i use is UV and fuel resistant.... if ya havent done anything to it yet.. i'd be happy to do it for a few bucks + shipping...

Thanks guys. KZJim, I may just take you up on that down the road. However, I need to get this up and running first before I start making it look purty.

I saw a show on DIY where they stripped the paint off of a VW Jetta and took a grinder to the roof and made dsigns on it. They clear coated it and it looked killer.

I stripped and allowed to slightly rust, a cromoly BMX dirt jump frame and flat clear coated for my son years ago. Halted the rust process and it stood up quite well, looked nasty too. Just used an automotive spray can clear.

I'd imagine that the spray can stuff will hold up well enough, i suggested the good stuff becuase it would be more gas resistant.

The product to use is House of Kolor AP-01. It is the adhesion promoter I mentioned earlier. Then simply clear coat over that. I would use an automotive catalyzed type clear though.
