seat rubbing tank

I have recently had this bike painted and have noticed that my seat rubs the back of the tank when I ride. Do the seats on a Z1 normally rub the tank or is my seat pan warped? Any suggestions as how to keep the paint from getting marred.

yeah that is a common occurence,maybe try slipping a small strip of rubber in there.goodluck,happy wrenching!

I'm not sure how your Z1 tank mounts. But on my 650 there is a rubber grommet that a tab on the back of the tank slides into. Mine was loose and the seat would rub. I got an oring that fit into the groove on the grommet and forced in back into the frame. Problem solved.

ALL Z1 tanks that I have seen, do rub. It's just the nature of the beast.
I saw a guy put a layer of tape in the place his rubbed, to protect his paint. His tape job looked like crap. It stuck up OVER the top of the seat. . If you did a careful job, I'm sure yours would look better.
For me, I just wax the heck out of it, and figure it's part of the doing business with the old gal.

You may be able to loosen the bolts that hold the seat hinges to the seat pan, then move the seat back a little. If I remember right there's some play in the bolt holes, or you could ream out the holes to create some play.

Mine obviously does the same and I was thinking you might be able to put a neat piece of that clear thin flexible plastic sheeting stuff that you use on the front of car bonnetts (hoods) to protect them from stone chips?

Haven't done it yet but will do when I fit my newly painted tank.

I noticed my seat was rubbing on my tank about a week after my paint job. Not good!
I use a blue shop towel (high quality paper towel), folded to fit between the seat and the tank. Works great and stays put, but you have to remember it's there when you lift the seat.
