throwing in towel on \"rusted rail\" - so, best way to prep for painting?

Hi Guys....

I've been trying my best (various techs) to get the rust off of that rack I picked up....

i think she is too far gone...

so, if i wanted simply to paint it some kind of accent color, what is the best way to start the process?

should i simply clean it up the best i can and then SAND THE HECK out of it??

I do have a wire brush attachment for my drill....

perhaps then move onto sand paper (coarse -> fine)???

ps. i've tried various ways to up load a pic (no luck... tried resizing, as a JPG...?)

sand the hell out of it to get all the rust off then get an adhesion promoter.
www.levineautoparts.com/buladprom.html they sell this at wall mart.
clean it spray it with the promoter allow full cure and scuff the promoter with 150 grit.
then your ready for primer coat.
if you spray paint on chrome it will peel or chip
even if you sand it.
and yes the pic must be jpg. also the filename can only contain alphanumeric characters with no spaces.

thats more like it!id say thats definately past the polishing stage,id try sand blasting youre not going to hurt it any and it will rough it up good enough to get some rustoleum primer to stick to it!goodluck,happy wrenching!

Looks like a prime candidate for that electrolysis method of rust removal. Do you have a car battery charger?

here is another pre primer product.
this would actually be better for your application than the adhesion promoter.

this stuff seals as it eats the rust.
sandblasting is great if you have access to it.
the ospho will run you anywhere from $4.00 to $12.00
depending on how much you buy and can be easily found at hardware stores and paint stores like sherwin williams. if thats the only peice your working on then a pint should cover it.

I doubt they are the same size but there is a junkyard near my work that has a rack like yours with no rust but on a 550LTD. I can grab it if your interested. I took a pretty good look at it and it is very clean.

Blast it and have it powdercoated.

it will give me the chance to try a few different rust removing options (got to learn anyway, the bike needs some real TLC.... no time like the present!)
