Not sure, you could check the wiring diagram. It sounds like a connection issue in the ignition circuit (when you switched the lights on it put additional load on the circuit) what is the battery voltage and what is the voltage at the coil positive terminal with the ignition and and kill switch set to run (should be no more than 0.5v difference between the two readings) ?

I'll need to get a voltage meter , was hoping it was a simple fix like a fuse .

Does your headlight come on when you turn the ignition key?  Why are you kick starting it?  Is there a problem with the electric starter?

Take your tank off and check the plug connections, pay close attention to the one that connects your ignition to the main circuit.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I would swap in new fuses as a just in case. Assuming you have the stock-type glass fuses, sometimes a fuse can appear good but the fuse wire between the end caps can be separated from one of the caps. I've never seen this, but apparently it's a thing.

ps: be sure to use the correct size fuses. i.e., correct amps. the stock fuse box may have a label or it could be embossed with the info.

If I remember correctly there were several B1 models from 1976 (KE175 B1, KZ750 twin B1, KZ 900 LTD B1) there may be others. Which model are you talking about as the 3 mentioned all have somewhat different electrical systems/wiring. Knowing which may help us to provide more useful information/tests for you.

His bio says it's a 750.  It also says he has an Elsie!  What a great bike!

Could't agree more, the majority of electrical issues with these old bikes is down to corrosion causing resistance faults which manifest as "Volt drop" you can only effectively diagnose these issues with a voltmeter. For a small outlay (maybe £25) you will save yourself days of heartache
