spark plug boots was created by motoaddict
Hi gang, So today I went to check the plugs on this old girl (76 KZ900) and when I pulled the first boot it popped off the wire like it wasn't even attached. What is the direction I should take here. Do I just cut the jacket back and exposed new wire? Should I get new boots? The old ones are lookin pretty crusty inside. What are my aftermarket options? Cheers!

If you want to keep the OEM coils you choices are limited. If you have enough length, you can cut them back a smidge at a time to expose clean core wire. Then you can get new NGK caps. I’ve seen HT wire couplers. I have no experience with them but they could be an option to replace the plug wires. Other than that new coils are your only other option. Make sure you get 3 or 4 ohm coils. Factory spec is 3.2~3.8 primary ohms. DynaTek makes 3 and 5 ohms. As far as I know either are fine.

Perfect, Think I will just get new boots and try to stretch the wires a bit. So are the factory boots a resistor type?

If you are using resistor plugs, the resistor boots are not needed and vice versa.

"If you are using resistor plugs, the resistor boots are not needed and vice versa."

So I ended up dissecting the old boot and found only the hooked spring inside. Ended up cleaning it up, piercing the jacket in a new spot and pushing it back in to the boot. Good as new. So was this supposed to be a resistor boot? Should I get a set of resistor plugs instead? I tried to look up pictures of the original boots and these do not look like they are from kawasaki.

Honestly, that looks like a chainsaw or leaf blower plug boot. You do not actually need any resistors at all as long as you do not mind causing interference with nearby AM radios.
