I am trying to figure out an erratic. bouncing tach needle and inop voltmeter issue on my 83 kz1100 shaft. I went thru the first two test in my manual and everything checks out so far. Onto the third test which is to test the push button tach/volt switch. I am stumped here. It says to check contunity between red, green. and yellow. I cant see any red, green yellow within the group of wires going up into the gauge cluster nor can I see the connector referenced in the pic on the manual. I have included pics of my manual and the test described within. Do I have the correct manual? Is that red, green, yellow connector up in behind the cluster requiring cluster removal? Anyone have similar issues and have any input on how to fix it? The bike still runs, starts, and charges fine and all the fuses under the seat check out.
Any input will be appreciated,
Dan

I don't have a wiring diagram for an 83 1100 shaft, and I'm not sure which shaft model you are referring to. I assume it's the '83 1100D2? spectre in your signature?

But I do have a few difficult-to-read diagrams from 1100's showing the tach and voltmeter.
81 1100B1 gpz
82 1100 gpz
82 1100D1 spectre
84/85 Zn1100B1/B2 Ltd

Some show separate meters and some show a button to use the tach as a voltmeter.

(The Zn1100 diagram from a Clymer manual has a pretty serious error in the tach/volt button in case you come across that diagram online.)

In all diagrams, they show these wire colors for the tach:
Black is the tach signal from the 1-4 coil.
Brown is 12v.
Black/yellow is ground.

None of the models shows a red or green or yellow wire to the tach or voltmeter.

The pic in the profile is not the bike I am having the issue with, it is an 83 kz1100 shaft A1 as in the pic here...

I am thinking the push button tach/voltmeter switch may be faulty.

The red, green, yellow wire and connector is from the tachometer/voltmeter troubleshooting section of the manual.

This is the cluster on the Spectre, which is the same as the kz. I cant find the red, green and yellow wires or connector on the spectre either.

I have a similar problem with my tach. I'm pretty sure my coil connection is disconnected because I remember seeing a loose wire around the coils.

Have you checked where those wires are supposed to go?

What page are you on in the manual? The troubleshooting section (5-32) in my manual doesn't look like yours. I will post pics in a second. It matches what loudhvx posted for the wiring as well. To verify the correct manual you compare your vin number to the ones on the back of the book.

My bike is not with me right now for me to check mine. It shows the 6 pin (tests 1,2, and 3) in the head light housing and the green red and yellow (test 4) inside the gauge housing.

You don't see the plug is the problem correct?

Also it's an A3 not A1 based on the VIN

I think I have the correct manual.
I did not perform any test involving connections under left side cover. I will dig into that.
The 4 connections from the coils are all good.
