A friend of mine has a 1978 KZ1000 that I will be going over.
Apparently she was a running bike when put away.

He's got a Harley gas tank (I believe) and a Tractor style seat he wants to use.
I'm going to try and get her running.
Go over the brakes, and check everything.
Switching back to the stock air box.
I see this model's air box has a second box further towards the back: Silencer part #11016-009 (part #15 in the diagram below}:

[img

Is this part/silencer needed?
Can I just use the main air box on it's own?

The KZ1000 as it comes to me:

You don't need the silencer, it does give a bit of support for the airbox but not needed if you are using the support plate at the bottom of the airbox.
If you have the silencer they bring a good buck on ebay. Also if the guy is going with a different exhaust I may be interested in that stock exhaust.

VM26 Carb questions:

The red lines going to the ports on carbs 2 & 4 are Vents, correct?

What is the port at the end of the yellow line? On carb 3?
It's currently blocked off.

There are two gas lines; one connected between carbs 1&2 and another between carbs 3&4.

Carbs off to see what jetting is in them.
Looks like 105 main jets.
Not seeing any marking on the Pilot jets:

Did a little cleaning of the engine and other bits, on the left side, as that's what I see.

Had a look at the headlight he wants me to use.
No wiring diagram, so need to test each circuit.
If it's LED, will I likely need something in the wiring added?

LED headlamp should be fine as long as it doesn't have a "reserve lighting" unit. If so let me know and I will look at how to by-pass it

I gave the outside of the carbs a bit of cleaning.

Since I cleaned the engine's left side already, I gave the right side some cleaning.

The points cover will need some sanding to get rid of some scratches.
They seem to be more robust/thicker than a 650's points cover.
Cleaning under the points cover, something didn't feel right.

There is a spare in the goodies box that was sent with the bike.
Is it an easy swap, or engine cases need to be split?

Not hard at all to change the points housing. You will have to remove the points plate (or electronic ignition plate) and the advancer from the end of the crankshaft to change it.  There is a gasket between the housing and engine block that should be replaced, and it might be a good idea to replace that rubber seal in the points housing, they're cheap and readily available.  No need to split the cases.  But you'll have to set the ignition timing again after you're done.
