KZTrip's KZ1000P Project was created by KZTRIP
Well I just got an 89 KZ1000 Police model
About 50k miles on it
It had been sitting a couple years.
I turned to prime for 10/15 seconds, pulled the choke on, in less than 10 cranks it was running
Inlet it run a bit, then turned it off, needed oil, it was pretty low, added a gallon of fresh gas, to mix with whatever was there, started it back up, and rose it a couple miles home.
Now it's parked in the garage awaiting my decision on what do do next
On the short ride, I noticed a couple things

Lots of rattle noise, I don't think it's engine, probably things hanging lose from the police equip being removed
At some point a had a bit of wobble, not sure, it didn't happen again on the short ride
Otherwise, it ran better than I expected for what it cost me (undisclosed)

Body wise, pretty clean, the radio/saddle boxes are really worn, and hinges broken, so that will have an influence on what kind of project I end up with
There's some scratches and such on the tank, the fairing is in I guess 80% condition! it has duct tape on the corners but I see no cracks, looks like it's just holding the edging on. Windshield isn't crystal clear, but doable.
Wiring for the front blue/red lights were cut, so I'll have to deal with that. the light sockets are in tact.
The controls and switches appear to have oxidation(?) not sure how else to describe it.

Now for the project
Well, the first project is deciding on an actual project, I'm just not sure yet, part of me wants to maintain the police bike look, and part of me wants to convert to a more sporty bike, then I kinda want to add a second seat, if I do that, I may keep the police look on front, with a passenger seat in place of the radio box and saddle boxes, maybe even change color then too

I'd like to keep it running and drivable while doing whatever I do.

So, first, I'm thinking stripping in sections, and thoroughly cleaning things, just to make it all shine a bit better, and adjust things along the way
Is there a method of detail cleaning. I'll probably do a carb clean. Not sure how to determine if it's low oil hurt anything

I also obtained an 86 KZ1000P, in parts, but mostly complete as far as I can tell, haven't inventoried the parts yet, it's missing the carbs, that's all I'm sure of so far, for that one, the fairing is broken at one of the signal lights, not sure I can recover that, I'll be looking in the body forum for trying to fix that if i need it, i think the saddle boxes on the 86 are in better shape, so those may get transferred if I keep the police bike look, I'm hoping most of the parts between the 86 & 89 are interchangeable, please feel free to enlighten me on that

Anyways, I will certainly be looking for pointers here

Thanks in advance to those willing to help/guide

As far as determining compatible parts, you can look them up here:
www.motogrid.com/pages/OemParts?aribrand=KUS
Use the left side to find your bike, go to a parts diagram, and look up the part # for the part in question.
Then back on that page, use the right side to paste in the part #, hit search, and click select model on the next page, which will tell you all the models that part was used on.
I think I've seen a couple other sites/techniques people use but this one works for me.
Good luck!

Weird, I looked up just a camshaft for the 86, used that part number in the search, did the where used, and the 86 isn't listed

For now I'm primarily thinking of engine parts, although I might want to use other parts that are in better condition of course.
Any one know if most or all the engine parts on the 86 are interchangeable with the 89, the 89 engine of course is complete, where the 86, so far has the carbs missing, and the upper half of the engine removed, my thoughts were to thoroughly clean the 86 engine parts I have, remove the 89, and start swapping, although I have no idea why the 86 was taken apart in the first place. So swapping things might not be such a good idea even if they are interchangeable
Not sure how to examine the engine parts to see what might be wrong with it, any clues?
Boy, I just have too much to consider right now, I'm probably going to need to figure out my project first huh, I keep going baking and forth thinking of three diff things to do with it

There's a lot of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part names, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc. Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

Click here > www.kzrider.com/forum/13-bike-related/37...imitstart=0&start=20

Similar information may also be obtained from Partzilla.

www.Partzilla.com shows Camshaft part number 12044-1027 used on 1982 KZ1000-P1 ~ 2003 KZ1000-P22 (police models) and 2005 KZ1000-P24 (police model), plus many other non-police models.

The www.kawasaki.com site seems to be temporarily down, but would suspect it provides the same information.

EDIT: kawasaki.com is back in business and says 1986 KZ1000-P camshaft part number 12044-1027 is used on the following models:

Yeah, I should have made it more clear you need what's under the "Part #" column on the listing (sometimes the diagram shows something that looks like a part number but isn't complete) and make sure you have the manufacturer set to Kawasaki on the quick part search.

But as Patton mentions, there's more than one way to skin a cat!
