Bike of the month - September 2010

Smash Adams's KZ440 A1
September 2010

This is Smash Adams's 1980 KZ 440 A1. A nice find with 3,000 original miles garage kept by one owner. You can see a better picture and some member comments in the gallery.

Over the years, KZrider.com has relied on member contributions to cover hosting, software, and other administrative costs. For the most part, these contributions have been enough to keep us online. During the 6 years I have owned and administered this website, I've probably only had to cover a few hundred dollars myself (naturally not counting the 1000s of hours I've invested). I'm incredibly thankful for the support of the many KZr members out there who have helped keep our beloved community online for nearly a decade. However, my goal is now to make KZr completly self-supportive, and put the financial burden on the many vendors out there instead of on the KZr end users.

Rollback
Written by kzrider
Wednesday, 05 December 2007

As you can see, I've gone back in time and brought back the "old" KZr. Things didn't end up like I wanted, and what was supposed to be faster actually got slower . Guess I'll need some more time to figure out where to go next.

What I need to do is find a forum solution that doesn't take ages to load. The main culprit is our huge memberbase, and both joomlaboard and fireboard (the forum I implemented yesterday) seem to struggle because of that. One solution is SMF (Simple Machines Forum), which is capabale of handling larger scale forums like ours. But there are challenges to overcome in order to implement this solution as well. My main focus since moving KZr to a content management system, has been seamless integration of the different components that make up the site. I'm very reluctant to move a way from that, even if it makes for better seperate features like discussion forums, gallery, classifieds, etc.

I'll leave the "new forum" in the Forum menu (called Fireboard) where you can view the posts made the past 24 hours.  I'm removing FireBoard from the menu. You should now use Joomlaboard again (the link "Forum" in the menu). Sorry for all the trouble...

Today's upgrades
Written by kzrider

Looks like I went a little overboard with all the upgrades today. I haven't been able to finish, and quite frankly, I'm not even sure if I like the new look anymore. So here's what I'll do:

  • Open the forums (one of the completed and successful upgrades) so that the most addicted of you can get your fix :-)
  • Go to bed
  • Let you all have a look at the new design (well, what's published anyways), and give you the opportunity to tell me that it sucks (if it does...)
  • Get everything straightened out tomorrow. Push through with the new design, or roll everything back.

Good night!
