I have a spare Lawson replica fuel tank and set of fenders that were going to be part of an earlier kz1000j project. I would like to use my spares as a paint set. Will the ELR tank fir the 750 or should I just try to trade for a GPZ 750 tank?

To answer your question, the ELR tank is different than the 1982 GPz750 tank...it is longer and the tunnel is shaped differently...so it is not a drop-on replacement...it was take some crude metal working to reshape it to fit the GPz750 frame. Secondly, since the ELR tank is longer, the GPz750 seat will no longer fit as the seat will be too long...so you'll be dealing with that also. The ELR fender will fit as it is the same width, but it is 2" longer (curved length) than the GPz750 fender so it might look odd. That said...the only direct bodywork swaps between the 1982 ELR and the 1982 GPz750 are the tail cowling and the front fairing. As for trading your ELR tank for a GPz750 tank, sell the ELR tank outright...it is worth so much more than the GPz750...like $500 vs. $250. That said, 1982 GPz750 tanks are becoming increasingly rare and difficult to source. Keep in mind that the 1983/4 KZ750L and 1984 KZ700A tanks are the same as the 1982 GPz750 tanks, except for paint scheme.

Like McDroid said, the ELR tank is a valuable item, put it on e-bay and you can be pretty certain it will sell if your reserve isn't too high. $500 is a fair price for an ELR tank in good condition and you might get more.

No, see the seat on my ELR in the avatar..... that's a GPz750 seat. The length and width seems the same, just the underseat mountings are different. I was quite suprised myself.

Pic below is a GPz750R1 seat modified with ELR cover. ELR restoration still has quite a way to go still but i've done most of the grafting. Just a mock up, wiring to finish before tank sits right and this seat is replaced with a GPz11 item, hopefully ican scoop it and recover it as good as the 750 seat.

Those are correct ELR yokes with renthall bars. These bits often get changed over with other big kawis. The reason was to alter the rider position according to kawasaki.

Used ELR seats are like the holy grail, a NOS went for over £600 on ebay uk. Most copy or pattern Lawson seats just don't have the right shape. That 750 seat you see is the 5th that has been on it, hopefully I can get it right 6 th time lucky. One of the hardest bits to find.

Z1 parts sell the repro seat covers, 1000/1100 seat bases can be used but the foam needs altering. this is where it all goes wrong, even pro seat makers mess it up - been there twice.
You just got to keep at it.

Tyrell does the KZ 1000J seat fit onto the GPZ 750? or are the mounts different? I saw that you said the lengths seem the same? I am asking because I see a company called American Classix offers a complete ELR seat replacement for $375
