Thanks Ed,
That thread's a good read. Unfortunately, on my 750 forks a spark plug socket is too large to fit inside the fork tube. Once I get it apart I will post about which size hex will do the job, if, in fact, there is a hex recess in these dampers.
Regards
Bill

Kidkawie was partially correct. There are four tiny recesses in the top of the damper rod that the corners of the special tool will fit into. However the force required to unthread the bottom cap screw with it's thread locker compound easily over over powers the grip the tool has in the recesses. At that point the tool ends up working like an easy out and ended up making some small amount of metal filings. No real damage was done I'll be reassembling the forks tonight.

By any chance did you heat the bottom allen bolts? I've done several sets of forks with good results using a propane torch on the bottom allen bolts & fork caps (oil drained. drain screws & air valves removed).

Hi Martin,
No I didn't but that would have been a great idea. It would have softened the thread locker stuff and reduced the force required. Oh Well, Next Time.

I started to reassemble the forks but decided that the DaySpring fork boots I'd purchased were not to my liking. I called the Kaw dealer this morning and ordered a set of fork boots to match the ones on my 82 Spectre. Holy Shiite $57.00 each. I ordered 'em anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion Martin! It didn't help me this time but hopefully another member will pick up on it in time to save a lot of torquing and turning in the future.
