So I just picked up this KZ650SR. Rebuilt carbs, everything runs brilliantly mechanically...but there's a big electrical issue.

Previous owner jump started it with a car :pinch:
He then replaced the regulator...BUT the head light, side blinkers, and tail light don't turn on.
When you hit the L/R turn indicator the corresponding light on the gauges lights up solid. Backlight on tach works, as does the neutral light.

I'll get in there with a voltmeter as soon as I have time, but do y'all have anything you think it might be off the top of your collective heads?
I'm guessing relays have been fried and I might also need a new wiring harness (fine with me if it happens, I'll spend the money for a nicer one) but I'd love it if that's not the case.

Also, the 1978 KZ650 SR is which wiring diagram on here? I want to say D1A?

Thanks in advance.

There's a small fuse box with 2 fuses that look fine...I'll probably replace them anyways to be safe. PO said he replaced them.

Yes...look under the FILEBASE tab above...then under 'fours', etc. It is on page four under 650 electrical...D1 wiring diagram.

Yes. It would appear that the turn signal relay(s) may have lost the battle BUT first inspect and test all your bulbs because potentially, you have one or more blown bulbs. - Indicator lights blink ON and stay that way - is an indication that a turn signal bulb is blown and it could turn out to be every one of them.

The turn signal relay (and the hazard relay, which are wired using the same source input vdc) is getting powered from the ignition switch and since your indicator lights blink on, this tells you the relays are being powered because the indicators and the turn signals are wired together in the same circuit.

Since your Neutral light display lights up, this also tells you that your brake switches are being powered and so, your tail light should illuminate when you grip/step-on the brakes. Again, an indication that the bulbs themselves are a problem.

There is a chance (probably a good chance) that the starter motor relay has been stressed and hence why the starter is "dicey". Since you can kick it over and it starts easily otherwise.

The 1978 KZ650-SR could be the KZ650-D1 or the KZ650-D1A. The difference is the carbs. The D1 has Mikuni VM24SS carbs; the D1A has Mikuni VM22SS carbs. See image below for the difference. Ed

Thanks guys, hopefully I'll have time to dig into it a little more tomorrow, replace bulbs and see where it's at from there.

Tinkered a bit...blinkers are fine. Replaced the headlight, fiddled with the light switch button on the controls and still got nothing so I'm assuming a relay needs to be replaced. High beam indicator light doesn't do anything either.

I'm going to try plugging in the stock brake light to see what happens tomorrow.

One of my best friends is an electrician, I bought him a couple of six packs and he looked it over...we are both going to completely redo the wiring (because why not?) so it's new and I can try to get it looking a little cleaner.

Question though...if I bypass the starter the kickstart should work just fine still, correct? Said starter already doesn't really work.

Yes, the kick starter is not dependent on the electric starter at all. Ed

Giving a quick update...
I'm going to be ordering a Motogadget M-Unit and M-Button to replace the current wiring. Its simple, elegant and it gives me some great options electronically.

Once I have that in and wired and I clean the gas tank I should be on the road!
