I will clean that engine ground first thing tommorow. And during work today it hit me that this bike has a fuel gauge and I didn't remember unplug going anything from the tank and I almost got my hand stuck in a belt grinder I was so dumbfounded. I've ordered the new fuel level sensor but my question is why would the PO cut it in the first place! I'm very relived to have figured this out, now I just need that rectifier and I'll be golden

The fuel gauge operates on very low voltage. That could be what it is for. My old Ford has a mini old style regulator that turns the current off and on to keep the volts at 5V.
