Lou, have you ever run an '81 using the later ignition?

Looking at the advance 'curve' it looks better, the early mechanical advance seems quite on/off when looking at it with a strobe.

I agree. The mechanical advance suffers from the limitation of physics.
The analog, electronic advance is an improvement. However, even it has limitations.
A fully digital, programmable advance is the way to go, and is easily modified with software. That is what I'm working on, but it's slow and I lose momentum on it. The early pickup/rotor shape is not well suited to electronic advance, so there's a lot of obstacles to overcome. The ZX pickup/rotor would be easier to use, but are far less common.

I have not tried the ZX ignition on a KZ. I thought someone, maybe you, mentioned that the pickup assembly does not fit easily into the KZ motor.

Yes, I seem to remember trying that but it wasn't a fit on the older motor and like yourself I didn't pursue it, but I like the idea of taking the advance to the limit throughout the rpm range.
Would a 'knock sensor' as with modern car EFI work on our rattly old engines?

Currently got green dyna coils, dyna ignition and rpm limiter...it is such a blast to ride, so crisp off the throttle too.

It wouldn't be too hard to incorporate a knock sensor circuit. All of my gpz's knock if I get caught in the wrong gear on the highway on a hot day. Like you said, the mechanical one is all-in too soon, so low RPM, high gear, and too much throttle will sound like a diesel.
