On my 77' KZ1000A, I'm looking at the stock plug wires and coils. It appears that the plug wire coil end is attached permanently to the coil? I was prepared to test the coils and possibly run some new wires but no way to attach to the coils? I'm assuming the spark plug caps can be changed out since #4 plug cap is broken.

What are my options???

If the ignition coils, have "Ridges" on them, they will unscrew, letting you replace the sparkplug wires. 7mm sparkplug wire will fir right in. Now, some are sealed in the ignition coil, requiring possible replacement of the coils & plug wires. The Dyna green coils are a good replacement, as are the Accel yellow coils. Both of these coils will need ring terminals, in the place of the Kawasaki "Push On" terminals. Also, both coils mounting hardware, may short out, requiring plastic of nylon spacers in the place of the metal ones. And, there's non replaceable, 5000 ohm resistor in the Kawasaki sparkplug cap, that can become intermittent, due to heat, vibration, and age.

Definitely wires are sealed in the coils. There are a few companies that I've seen that sell the coil w/sealed plug wires and caps. I don't how good these are but pricing seems good.

If your wires are permanently attached like those on my '77 KZ650, but if you only need to replace the wires you can buy splicers that will let you cut off most (not all) of the old wire and attach new. Here's the link. Ed

Thanks Ed. This bike hasn't ran in over 20 years, so trying to bring it back to life! I have no battery for it. Is there a way to test the coils to see if they are good?
