I decided after three seasons to change my plugs. I bought B8es plugs. What I pulled out were BR 7ES. The wires are NGK. Should I have replaced them with a resistor plug?

No. But why did you change to a colder plug? When I had colder plugs in my KZ650 they fouled. Ed

I read that 8 was preferred for all around riding, and 7 were for slow riding in town. Would it make a difference if my bike was always loaded down with heavy cargo?

I don't know. You may want to check them after a hundred miles or so to see if they are black with soot compared to the old ones they replaced. Ed

With NGK, the lower the # the Hotter. So 7 is hotter than 8, 9 would be colder than 8.
Non Resistor plugs should be used. So No "R" in the part # with NGK. The resistor plugs would have lowered your spark output, which would make them darker, giving a false plug reading.
Back to the stock plugs, which are non Resistor, would be my choice.

I didn't think they should be resistors. I guess I didn't realize that was what I had in there for three years.
I assume the look of the old plugs doesn't mean much since they were in so long and were wrong.

Its not shown well in the picture, but the white its actually slightly tan and they are in order left to right as you sit on the bike.
